Any idea what this tide mark sort of thing on the sound deadening material on the underside of this bonnet might be:

It's a 5yo Focus a pal is looking to buy. I thought flood damage but the rest of the car is OK apparently.Odd Marks

Do you remember those experiments at school with blotting paper and a drop of ink? That looks the same to me.
I'm guessing some water gets in under the front of the bonnet and soaks into the material. It then wicks up that, and any salts in the water get deposited when it dries out. Rainwater wouldn't have salts, but there might be some in the material or if the water is from a car wash, say.

Did the engine bay look like it had been pressure washed?

Spray getting into the engine bay will dry quickly and deposit and road salt behind. Engine bays aren?t sealed.
Plenty of salt in road spray in the winter.
Hadn't thought of that.
