Ooops - Wing Mirror -vs- Garage Door Frame...

Ford Fiesta Azura 1.8 Diesel N Reg ~96? - "Old Style" body

I was reversing the car into the garage, when all of a sudden the garage door frame must have jumped towards the car, catching my passenger (left) side wing mirror. ;)

I didn't stop in time - the "mirror" (actually the plastic casing and mirror) ended up "dangling" by three springy looking wires.

I've pushed the casing with the mirror in it, into position, but am unconvinced it will stick there permanently, and besides, adjustment of the mirror is fruitless, the mirror ends up positioning itself to where it wants, which is not ideal (but not that far out of position!). There's also some "cracked" plasticy bits inside.

Replacement is therefore probably needed.

So, I want a replacement. But I don't know what part!

Is it an "easy job" or something for a Ford specialist? Or something my local indy garage would be able to do? What sort of price am I looking at?

Hints, tips and anecdotes welcomed!

Thanks

Noz (Having "one of those" weekends)

It's an easy job to do yourself. If it's like a Ka, you need to get the trim off the inside of the door behind the mirror, it'll be held on by 3 clips. It should just come off if you pull hard enough, and then you can get 3 new clips. There's then a big plastic nut that holds the mirror onto the car, you undo that (a big adjustable spanner should do), and the mirror comes off. You then do the same thing at a scrapyard, or go to somewhere that strips them off for you and has them on the shelf if you're not feeling that involved, and then put the big plastic nut back on with your new mirror and put the trim back on with 3 new clips from the Ford dealers.

If it the one like the L reg ! I think there's a bit more to it but it's still quite easy. :-) You have to remove the door trim after removing the rest and winder. Retaining spring clip to be eased out with small screwdriver. Also the mirror adjustment lever is removed in the same way. Remove the internal plastic trim retaining screw, and then carefully lever out the front of the trim away from the door, which is held in by a plastic pin that can easliy be broken off, and then slide backwards to remove. Then the two mirror retaining screws can be undone and a new mirror refixed. I'm not sure of the price, but generally Ford parts are quite reasonable and it is well worth doing. :-)

Andy Pandy To e-mail, address hopefully, self-explanatory !

Recently had to replace a Granada mirror (electric) and got this for £25 from a scrapyard website which sent it by courier. Rather cheaper than a maindealer I thought and avoids the need to scrabble around the yard amongst the wrecks (although I think some odd sorts actually like doing this!). However you will need to identify the model of car on the website to get the right part.

Thanks for the replies here - I'm just about to go to the virtual scrapyard on the net and order the part.

Really appreciate the replies
