OT - Motorhome insurance query

Mar 13, 2013 3 Replies

I've just been through getting an on-line quote for insurance and was surprised to reach the end of the process without being asked for a vehicle registration.

Is this normal? I guess the base vehicle is of little relevance to the premium but I would have thought that for legal purposes that a unique identifier, like a registration number, would be needed.

Didn't actually go through to making a payment so maybe it'll happen at that stage.

Exactly. Up until that stage, it's just a quote. There are no "legal purposes". Quite the opposite - there's a strong chance that you don't even know the plate at the stage of getting a quote, since you're umming and ahhing about whether to buy it/one.

FWIW, we've got the van with Swinton's Safeguard brand. They've been surprisingly good, far better than I'd have expected for an as-seen-on-tv national. Not only did they give us a very decent quote, but they're the only ones who'd give us full-year-out-of-UK, dealt with a Green Card disagreement very well, and were good on a slightly odd glass claim.

Whoa! £570 vs £160 with the Caravan Club. I think not!

We've had personal experience of Caravan Club insurance in the past when my wife scraped the side of our caravan on the M6 so I'm inclined to stick with them

Oops. Looks like I missed out the bit about having NCD on other cars. Still only brings it down to £260 though.
