OT petrol tap

I have a cheap generator and the petrol tap has snapped off. No problem I will fit another one.

But where to get it from has become a problem. Nothing in Screwdfix, Machine tart or Axmonster. I don't know any other catalogues to look at.

Searching Petrol tap or fuel tap brings up motorcycle, eBay and Honda. . A Lawnmower shop may be the answer but some of you ingenious bods out there must have had a similar problem and know a site newsgroup or suppler that stocks a generic type of tap

Any help appreciated.

I have cross posted as I am not sure where the best place is to get help.

Motorbike shop?

I'll have a look in the garage to see what I've got tomorrow. Any idea of what size/what threads it's got etc, or even any chance of a pic?

OOPS

I have a photo but I am not clever enough to post it ! (you don't want a

600kb posting on the newsgroup do you ? )

I had to melt the stub out of the tank. ( it had been full of water so it did not blow up, but it is rusty )

To clean the thread I ran an M10 1.25 tap down the thread and it seemed to be the right size. The tap with all its thread would be about 11/2 inches high. The outlet to the left makes it about the same wide. A flat lever on the front has a half turn from on to off. There would have been a plastic filter in the top of the tap if I had not melted it ))

No, not really. Can you put it photobucket, or email it to me at shazzbat3ATyahoodotcodotuk

I'll lay odds the thread is 3/8 BSP, not metric.

Ah, I haven't got anything like that. I was thinking more along the lines of those at the link Steve Taylor posted. Although I don't share his confidence about the imperial thread.

Do you know what make the generator is? If for instance it's Honda, it's quite likely to be a shared part with one of their bikes. It certainly looks M/cycle-ish to me.

M10 is much smaller than 3/8 BSP.

M10 will even fall through a 1/4 BSP hole.

M10 x 1.5 and 1/8 BSP diameters are getting close but the pitch is a mile out.

Only the OP can tell us how close the M10 x 1.5 pitch is to his original hole but I'd guess that he's not far out. If it's far eastern in origin a metric thread is the most likely.

I would say its a cheap Chinese import from BQ.

I will probably have to find a fitting to go into the tank and then fit an inline tap and filter. Probably cheaper to buy another generator!

You're right, sorry. Read the wrong line in my thread tables.

I've had all sorts of Chinese and Korean gear, which STILL uses BSP.

All right, this is from the US but it originated in Italy:

to go back a step.

I can find lots about bike suspensions on the Paioli/OMG site but the fuel taps have escaped me.

If I had to guess what thread a petrol tap had. Either 1/8" BSP or 10mm x

1.25, my money would be on it being 1/8" BSP, no matter what part of the world it came from. Manufacturers tend to use std threads, and fittings that are commonly available, as they are usually cheaper to buy in. 10x1.25 on a tap would make it an oddball. Mike.

OK, here they are:

It needs IE, I think. Look under Products/Moto components/manual fuel taps. Press the 'go' button beside the keyword box.

I don't see your exact match but an M10 x 1 (like brake pipe thread) seems to be a standard.

In article , 4x4v6 writes

Looks like a fairly standard Japanese bike/mower tap (Suzuki or Honda ISTR). Lawnmower shop would be a good start (as others have said). Does it have to be right-angle out or can it be straight through?

Hi Yes it can be straight through. Looks as though the thread may be a problem but I must say a big thank you to everyone who has tried to help.

If it was a Honda set then searching out your local honda spares place would almost certinaly produce a replacement tap. I investigated a set of piston rings and gasket set for a Honda gen set that was at least 25 years old, wouldn't have been a problem...

In fact it might be worth looking out your Honda spares place and if it's not to far away taking that tap in to see what they have.

Well, I saw in the paper today that Aldi are doing a generator tomorrow for £80. I don't know what output or anything though. I toyed briefly with the idea of getting one, but it's a bit extravagant just to be able to use the strimmer down the allotment.

If you're going to go for it you have to get to Aldi early if my experience with the compressor is anything to go by.
