OT - Re-taxing a newly purchased vehicle

We've just purchased an old camper which is just taxed to the end of this month. I've posted off all the paperwork to the DVLA but I'm concerned that I might not get the renewal letter in time.

Is there anything I can do to speed the process up or do I just have to wait for the DVLA to do their stuff?

you don't need the renewal to re-tax it. just do it online.

Since you'd need the new V5C to come through in time to do that, I'd suggest the post office is a better bet. Only need the little "new keeper" slip from the old V5C. (plus the usual MOT & insurance. And money, of course)

Thanks, didn't know that. Got myself a V10 from the DVLA site now.

Which I didn't need in the post office. A lot simpler that I thought it was going to be.

That's most unusual when dealing with DVLA.

And how - having sold a car in December I find that DVLA haven't been arsed to update their records and are now sending me threatening SORN letters. The fact that their process is broken doesn't seem to concern them.

That's more like it!

DVLA seem to be aware that it's all, umm, less than reliable. That's why they've said - both on their website and on the V5C itself for several years - that if you haven't had a confirmation letter within a month, it's up to you to chase 'em.

they no longer send a letter if you register sorn online, just a confirmation email.

It was the change of keeper that was the relevant bit there...

ah, sorry. Best one I ever had was when I sent off for a tax refund and declared sorn at the same time. received the cheque and paid it in, couple of months later a threatening letter about not having declared sorn, I replied that I had, they said I hadn't, when I pointed out that they had sent the refund cheque and therefore must have had the sorn, it all went quiet.
