overfilled header tank in rover 600

Wife just called from home,

She has a 97 rover 600. She has topped up header tank , then realised the max mark on side. It is apparantly filled to top of headerbottle

Whats danger of using the car , will it run out the overflow , boil off , ot shall she drive with header tank cap off to allow pressure to push excess out.

Im not back home til Monday to sort it myself.

The excess will just find its own way out past the pressure cap as the coolant expands next time she uses it. Nothing to worry about.

No problem but if she is fretting get her to remove the excess coolant

an easy low tech way is to take say 12 inches of hosepipe, put into the tank then put finger over the end and take out allow to empty and repeat until level is correct

flumpuk formulated on Thursday :

It will expand out via the overflow, no need to worry about it. The max level is there to stop you overfilling it, for it to be lost - with the consequent dilution of the anti-freeze it would cause.
