Isn't there an inspection hole on the backplate?

If not...

Slacken off handbrake adjuster. Pull off. May need pursuading with a hammer.

There IS an inspection hole... but I want to remove the brake drum to replace the shoes. I was wondering whether the drum is held on by a nut behind the soft alloy cap in the centre of the drum face :)

The ones on my 205, which may or may not be similar, needed persuading with a large socket that was holding the drum on and the rear wheel bearings in.

mine do not appear to have an inspection hole. You need to remove the axle nuts, which Peugeot recommend you replace. They have a dimple hammered into the crown to key into the stub axle. I got a garage to do mine since it failed the MOT on brakes before I got around to doing them :(

Cheers all for the replies :) I went to the local library and looked at the Haynes.

It says the alloy cap is sacrificial and MUST be replaced, as is the one-shot axle nut beneath, and rubber seal :(

Also, it says the nut must be torqued up to 148lb/ft !

So, it looks like NEXT Saturday, after I've sourced all the bits....

What a STUPID arrangement!

many cars are like this now. It is done for cheapness, only one component (drum/hub) a preset bearing (quicker to set up and IMO longer lasting) a cheaper nut with quicker assembly, no later readjustment of bearing etc. etc.

On a servicing note, the drum should come off once a year. There is usually an inspection hole with rubber bung on the brake back plate which can give you an idea of shoe thickness. Shoes may outlast the car nowadays, but the cylinders will probably leak.
