Polo 02 reg rear fog lights always on

Hi all, got a problem with an 02 reg Polo SDI, with the rear fog lights being permanently on. Both sides, as soon as the side lights go on the fogs go on full. The brake lights work fine, and the light to turn on the rear fogs turns on the tell-tale light on the dashboard, but makes no difference to the lights being shown on the rear of the car.

Is this a common problem, any ideas where to try looking first? First time we can get it to a garage is next Saturday, and i`d rather get this fixed ASAP for obvious reasons.

Thanks for your help!

How many bulb possibilities are there? The bulb holders have two contacts at the base, and the pins are offset from each other (whereas in most bulbs the pins stick out at 180 degrees, these stick out at more like 160 degrees.

Bulbs with pins at 160 deg, would tell me they're for 4/21w bulbs, or 21w Amber bulbs.

Did this problem just suddenly occur, or did you do something that may of caused it (change a bulb, alter any wiring...)?

Have you tried removing the bulbs? It could be that one has an internal short causing the problem.

I don`t know how long the issue has been for, as during the day the lights look normal (u`s not my car). It was only last night when I was driving in the dark that I became aware there was more red light coming out the back as I was driving than there should be.

We tried swapping out the bulbs, swapping sides and only having one bulb in, everything was working fine except the fog lghts being on.

Without a wiring diagram, it's just a process of elimination.

Could be something like a stuck relay. First thing I'd try is pulling out the foglight fuse to see what happens.
