A mate of mine has had the solenoid (or perhaps the wiring) fail on an R plate polo, does anyone know where it is located? Under the wheel arch? From the inside?

Can't be specific, but it's most likely to be next to the filler cap itself, and accesible from inside the car after removing interior trim near the fuel pipe to the tank.. You could also look in the h/book. Locking filler caps often have a manual release from inside the car if the electronic release fails Mike..
