Punto Mk2 rear lights - strange behavior

The nearside rear lights on my Punto started behaving very oddly a few weeks ago, whenever I put the indicator on I noticed the indicator blinking noise sped up for a few clicks then went back to normal. I eventually checked the lights and discovered the indicator, brake and side light were all flashing but only very dimly (the reverse light joined in if I put it in reverse). I checked the bulbs & lo and behold the side light was blown. Everything worked fine after it was replaced. However, exactly the same problem has returned. Aha I thought, another blown bulb. Not this time though, they all work fine, and just to make sure, I checked each one in turn with a new bulb.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Poor earth in the multi-plug connector on the rear light cluster.

Take it off, clean up with wire wool and WD40. Should sort it out.

WD40? I wouldn't want the gunge it leaves behind once the solvent's evaporated off anywhere near contacts. a) it's an insulator, b) it attracts grime and dust and crap. I tend to use PCB cleaning solvent for cleaning up contacts, evaporates away leaving no residue.

I love the smell of WD40, and that's all I tend to use it for, a quick spray in the air before getting into the car ;-)
