Rear Brakes/Hand brake stuck on.

The wife drove our Ulysses up our sloping driveway applied the handbrake and went indoors.Next morning we found we cannot release the handbrake. We have tried pulling away uphill but it wont release..just drags the back wheels. I know the linnings were getting a bit low but why should it jamb on?What can we do now?? Any help much appreciated.

Tim gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

You can't release the lever? Or you've released the lever, but it's staying put with the brakes themselves locked?

Mk1 (806/Synergie) Ulysse or Mk2 (807/C8) Ulysse?

Have you tried giving the handle a REALLY firm tug upwards as you press the button?

& then stand on the footbrake at the same time

I am fairly sure yours has disc brake handbrake? If so it may be that the pads are just stuck to the disc. odd weather conditions can cause it. a good sharp whack on the caliper will usually release it, take care if it is on a slope though.

It is a mk1 with drum brakes.Yes we pressed like mad on the button but it is the brakes that are stuck

No they are drums.

in that case the sharp whack will need to be on the drum instead. probability is that a wheel cylinder or two has leaked, the brake fluid soaks up dampness which rusts the drum to the shoe.

Agreed. Just to clarify, jack it up, remove one wheel, whack the drum outer rim (i.e. radially) hard with a heavy hammer in two or three places.
