rear wash wippe

The rear washer is not working on my 1999 (V reg) Toyota Avensis Estate. The jet appears clear and is connected. I am not finding any obvious water leaks but am in some difficulty tracking the pipework - there is no Haynes for this car. The front washers are AOK. Any guidance gratefully accepted.

Thanks in anticipation.

It's almost certainly broken where it crosses the tailgate hinge. That's where every other car I've had dead rear washers have gone.

Generic advice: Trace the pipe from the reservoir, pull off the hose at the reservoir and check it pumps out, there is probably a filter in the tank. It may use one pump and a valve to divert water to the back. The pipe usually goes up the screen pillar and off to the back, but if water is not pouring out at the back then probably the fault is at the tank end.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Peter Balcombe" saying something like:

On some of the earlier Toyotas there is a small changeover valve under the bonnet; when you press the rear washer switch it energises the pump and the changeover valve, diverting water to the rear window jet. It's not uncommon for these to stick internally and a simple dunt with a screwdriver might cure it. Take it out and clean it or replace.
