Renault Scenic & automatic transmission

Hi

I wonder if anybody have had any problems with Scenic´s automatic transmission ?

It is suddenly started to slide when set to "D". Reversing works okay though. It is like in case of manual gear box when clutch worn badly (except reversing) I have to take it to the dealer on the monday morning but I just thought to prepare my knowledge :) My car is driven like a bit over 200k...with no such a problems ever.

Any replies appreciated, John

If you got 200k miles out a Renault auto you deserve a medal. They are usually shot well before 100k!

You have 200k on the original transmission? they usually fail around 50k!!!! Renault + auto = disaster. Period.

To reply to the original poster - it sounds very much like the band clutches in your transmission are slipping. I don't think you can replace these without replacing the whole transmission.

To Tim - I've now seen quite a few people saying the Renault Auto transmission is a disaster. Yet here's someone who's just driven one for 200K, which strikes me as a very reasonable lifetime for a transmission. So clearly, *some* Renault auto transmissions are fine. I've now heard of quite a number of people who have had high mileages form them; equally, I've heard of them packing up after very low mileages. My question is, does anyone have any statistical, rather than anecdotal, evidence of how frequent problems are? I realise that such evidence would have to come from garages or Renault dealers, and might be commercially sensitive and so unavailable. I declare an interest here as the owner of a Renault with an Auto transmission. Mainly because when the current warranty expires in April, I need to decide whether to buy another warranty. It costs about £500 for three years cover. A new auto box is £1500 (of course the warranty covers other expensive to fix stuff like the air con). So whether it is worth buying depends on the chances of a problem. If there's a 50% chance of the gearbox failing in the next 3 years (by which time I guess the car will have done around 60-70K), then it would definitely make sense. If the chance is 10%, its marginal, if it is 1%, it's not worth it. So does anyone have any idea?
