But they trying to imply that a vice will do the work of a press after I said that a press is needed. Just saying that 'I've replaced 100's of bearings using a vice' means jack-s*it if the person hasn't replaced the bearing under discussion - I have and it needed a hydraulic press.

'Still think' Where do you get that idea? Nowhere have I said they're the same tool. You're responding to an assertion I didn't make. Try responding to those I did. What's wrong with that. Just 'cos /you/ say a press is needed doesn't make it so. I'm sorry to disillusion you, but there's more than one opinion here, and that's one of the reasons people ask for help - to get several approaches to a problem.

Me - I'd use the vice (I have a very large Record engineer's vice lurking) and if that didn't work I'd make a press with the bottle jack I've got somewere in the garage.

You'd go straight to the press.

You may argue till you're blue in the face that only one of these is correct, but frankly, that's a very narrow view. What's correct is generally what works. This isn't a dealership garage where all the correct tools are laid out in neat rows, this is people at home doing the best they can to avoid going to garages in the first place.

Having pressed them in with the press , purely cos I'm lazy, it's air over hydraulic & I can't be arsed they're almost never over 2tonnes on the way in, ithey where I'd assume they where faulty, getting them out's a different story but they knock out if you have to. & a vice, a clamp, a screw press, a cramp & a swing press all aplly pressure up to their working limit.
