Replacement Car Key

Hi all

Anyone know where I can get a replacement car key and 'plipper' / fob from? Its a Mazda one and Im told by the key cutter that it has a chip inside. I guess there are independents who specialise in this sort of thing? Located S london / Surrey area.

Many Thanks Steve

What model? Some of the late 1990s Mazdas, like my 1997 MX-5, had a simple immobiliser with a static code in the key. Timpsons (the High St cobblers/key cutters) can cut and encode these for £25 (second key half price) and they work fine. Later cars are more complicated and you might have to cough up whatever Mazda are asking for.

OK, thanks for the advice. Ill give Timps a go then. Its a 1999 latest edition 626 for the record.

I just had a key made by the main dealer for my golf 2001 cost me £134 odd quid! no one else could do it ... aparantly vw have a code no one else has :-( what a rip off but there was no other option.

Indeed. Seems like a licence to print money. Im surprised there arent enterprising individuals out there who can replicate / copy these and undercut the dealers, but maybe the technology doesnt allow?

Not for rolling codes and crypto keys AFAIK. The Timpsons guy was telling me about new BMWs - apparently they're impossible to copy, so all current models are made with 10 keys from new, of which 3 are given to the owner and the other 7 are locked in a vault back at BMW HQ in case you need a replacement. If you manage to lose all the keys and replacements, you're stuffed.
