Have a Rover 416 i.e that seems to be going through a rather thirsty spell! about 1 litre a week to be exact.. anything i could look quickly for or best just drop it in the garage

Firstly have you done any work on it that might have disturbed the cooling circuit?
nope, nothing at all. Thought maybe cylinder head but was under the impression that if that were the case the rad might be a bit messy which it isnt just going through loads of water..

You can get water in the oil too I suppose. Any damp patches anywhere else? Have you checked with the engine hot and the system pressurised?
Use the wipers less.

My 218 was like this when I first had it; it lost over a litre on a 300 mile round trip once.
It doesn't lose coolant any more. The only thing I've done to the cooling system has been to replace the thermostat. Not sure why this should be as it didn't overheat anyway - if anything the opposite was and still is true (the heater takes about 5 miles to get hot). But at least it no longer loses coolant.
The 'stats on these are quite expensive - £12-15 from Halfrauds, but worth doing if it solves the problem.
