Smugglers hidy hole?

Whilst grovelling underneath the van I came across this curious little platfom constructed out of timber immediately behind the nearside rear wheel.

It's got a little "swing gate" at the back secured by a toggle and is roughly shoebox sized apart from being completely open at the top.

Seems a daft and rather insecure place to store anything which will either get wet and mucky or possibly bounced out by going over a pothole.

Any suggestions as to what it might have been used for? Just curious.

Place to put your (muddy) wheel chocks?

Doesn't look long enough, though.

You could fit small chocks but not longer ramps. There are better places in the cab to store stuff like that though.

That'll be where the Cat has her kittens.

Hmm, it might just take a 5L plastic fuel can. I'll try mine in it tomorrow. Most plausible suggestion so far...

Spot on I think now. My 5L can is a perfect fit and can't bounce out. Thanks for solving the mystery!
