Strange BMW

Are you saying it can maintain 155mph for as long as the petrol lasts?

It should be able to, the petrol lump has 228hp, and that is good enough for 155 in other vehicles and the I8 is quite light and looks aerodynamic, so why not?

228 bhp from 1.5 litres? I'm seriously out of touch. 100 per litre seemed a miracle to me. ;-)

I believe it's the highest bhp/litre of any engine in the BMW range. Certainly was at launch.

So 90's

Direct injection has made a big difference to what OEMs consider safe for turbocharged engines. By 2014 152 bhp/L with direct injection wasn't really trying very hard.

Nissan achieved 140 bhp/L way back in 2001 with SR20VET (a Honda licensed Vtec head with a turbo). Port injection.

I can buy chips that with supporting bolt on mods give 330 bhp for Nissan's 1.8L CA18DET (183 bhp/L) and 360 bhp (180 bhp/L) for 2.0L SR20DET. Both port injection. (Firm producing these chips started with post in uk.rec.cars.mods... "anyone want to help?", he does have a Physics degree which may help.)

The 2L EVO VIII FQ-400 made 200bhp/L and had a warranty. The stock 2003 EVO VIII produced 276 bhp (138 bhp/L) with port injection. Standard EVO-X in 2007 was 291 bhp (145 bhp/L).

But the tuners route for more power is to reduce the amount of fuel that's chucked in, run the timing to det limit and then back off timing.

I know what you mean; although I recall that in the late 60's Honda were getting about 30 BHP out of the 5 cylinder 125 bike engine. Although at

23000 rpm.

And I see from the following that the Suzuki 50 cc triple claimed 380 BHP/litre (although I never saw that racing). Hailwood on the 297-6 was a joy to watch.

With the turbo revolution, it has become easy enough to dial up a desired output. There are many cases where some enthusiast have got

600bhp or more out of a four pot engine. But then there's the inevitable turbo lag and the concern of durability. I like a bit more meat in an engine and don't like engine noise. I prefer a 600 bhp RR rather than 600 bhp wound out of a screeming hot hatch.
