You need to identify where the click is coming from. Get someone to turn the key while you have your head in the works. Is it coming from the starter?

How have you verified that the starter is OK? Have you removed it from the engine and wired it up, and did the pinion move into its engaged position, and then turn?

My money is on the starter being faulty.

I'll give you evens on the ignition switch! But the starters a lot easier to test, so check that 1st.

What happens if you jumper straight to the motor?

I'd clean up both ends of the thick braided strap between the engine and the bodywork, then bolt it back up tight.

Those connections can build up a high resistance over time through corrosion - ordinary low current things work fine (radio, dashboard lights etc.) but when the starter tries to draw huge currents through it the voltage dropped across it rises to the point where there isn't enough to turn the motor.

Do all the other electrics go off when the starter goes 'chunk'?
