Tax disc renewal, extra month if get it on 1st?

Say may tax disc runs out out the 30th June if I renew it in June the new one will expire in 30 June 2007. But if I wait till 1st July, will it expire end of July 2007? Doing it the next day wont attract any penalties will it surely?

I don't know if the above is true but when buying a 2nd car I was told if I waited till the 1st Id get an extra month. Maybe its different when buying a car?

The only way of avoiding one months car tax now is to declare sorn for one month. But if your reg gets spotted by a camera, you've had it. Just pay it like I do & most other normal people.

Nope. It's perfectly correct in that case.

Buy used car from car dealer on 31st jan with 6 mths tax expiring 31st June or 1st feb expiring 31st July. Wait one day for 31 days more tax for same money. Same probably applies for a new car.

Continuous taxation prevents you doing it any other time other than by using the SORN sytem... hmmm...

You have to buy tax from the beginning of the current month, so the government will steal less money from you if you buy a car at the beginning of the month - unless you buy it with tax remaining from the previous owner.

Colin.

If you wish to have a gap between the tax ending and the new one starting you'll need to declare SORN.

If the car is new to you it doesn't need a continuous taxation history. But if you've used it before taxing it hope a camera hasn't caught you.

It will. And any tax you buy will too the car should be continuously covered. Unless you declare the car SORN and don't drive it from when the tax expires until you buy more tax.

There is a downside to it though. I bought the Pug untaxed and by the time the insurance documents came through it was the 23rd of the month. I needed the car on the road as soon as possible. I paid the same for a "year's" cover and 'lost' 25 days. .

Indeed very similar. I suspect my header contains the IP of the NTL's nntp server however :-) Apology accepted.

Robert (robert snipped-for-privacy@ntlworld.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

No, it contains the dynamically allocated IP of your NTL broadband connection.

Strange how both MarkyK and you seem to have the same dynamic IP, considering you posted barely less than half an hour apart - and the IP isn't normally freed and reallocated for several days without connection.

That'll be Erskine in Renfrewshire.

Odd how you both seem to have exactly the same build of Outlook Express, too.

Still, I'm sure it's just a remarkable coincidence, and you aren't really a sock.

Correct bu the tax disc expires on the 30th June, not the 31st July. He said that if he bought one on 1st July, it'd expire on the 31st.

And you wouldn't get a full month but merely the balance of unused tax from the previous month.

No it isn't. You cannot gain an extra month and a tax disc valid from the 1st July 2006 doesn't expire on the 31st July 2007.

If a 12 month tax disc starts on 1st July, why will it not run out on 30th June the following year?

Would it help you to understand better if I rephrased, and told you that you could avoid losing nearly a month of tax by delaying your car purchase from the end of one month until the beginning of the next?

Correct, obvious, irrelevant and never disputed.

Cheers,

Colin.

THanks but I don't need to be helped to understand anything regarding road tax. I don't have a problem understanding it.
