To give more details the car has done 95K miles.
The fuses are fine but more investigation reveals that the brake lights sometimes don't come on when the brake is depressed, thus my park problem.
What's the likely cause and how easy is it to fix?

Well start at the pedal mounted switch and check the connections, followed by the adjustment of said switch, and then get out the meter and check the electrical switchy-ness of it when u operate it manually!!

Try adjusting the brake light switch. Remove the pedal cover and the heater duct (held in with plastic rivets - lever out the centre part and it will loosen). Depress the brake pedal, then pull the brake switch plunger out as far as it will go. It is on a ratchet, so will be stiff and make a clicking noise as you move it out. Release the pedal and it will self adjust.
