Vosa MOT's and Certificates

Are all the Vosa MOT stations linked to a central computer ?

Today, I had my first MOT done on my three year old Astra. Unfortunately the garage made a mistake and put the incorrect mileage on certificate, adding 17,000 ( not amused).

Being nearly closing time, they refused to print another one, and they would have to contact the DTI to change the mileage before they could issue another cert, which hopefully they would be able to sort out on Monday and give me a ring when to collect it.

If this IS TRUE, then I can foresee someone at some time in the future having passed an MOT and not being able to use the vehicle because the info contained is not valid. Imagine having an MOT just before closing on the Thurday evening before Good Friday and not being able to have certs altered until the folling Tuesday.

**NB** It's a Vauxhall main Dealer so they aint that bright.

There are around 16,500 test stations (out of 19,500) that have been converted to MOT Computerisation. The remainder should be completed by March.

There are only a few details that can be altered by the MOT test station after a certificate has been issued. These being: colour, expiry date and mileage.

Mileage, however can only be altered before the end of the next working day*.

The tester who issued the original certificate must ensure the database is corrected and a replacement certificate will be issued free of charge after the relevant details have been verified.

ref: The MOT Testing Guide 6th edition, Section H, page 4.

*The next working day does not include Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holidays.

I had one last week , we'd only had the system installed for a week and I filled the mileage in wrong, but the customer only noticed it last week ! it was done last October !! but I warned him I couldn't change the details and he'd have to contact VOSA for them to alter it, unlike the old system we had the authority to change it, but im sure at some stage I can see this being handed back to us.

ive had V5's come through the workshop while collecting the data to do a test to find these have been filled out incorrectly by DVLA. one example a car was down as a petrol & it was a diesel & the fuel arrangement hadn't been changed !

we are sorting out DVLA's mistakes by collecting the right information, so hopefully when all the test stations are on line & its been running for a year or so, it should be running a lot smoother.................

I Having worked on a system for a motor manufacturer, I think the DVLA has details such as colour, engine etc. sent to them directly by the manufacturer at the point of registration. Not sure about imported S/H vehicles though - although at some point info goes from either an owner, a dealer, or a manufacturer.

Interestingly while working on that system there was a story in the papers about a guy who had been pulled-over on suspicion of driving a stolen car. Police vehicle had run a check on the reg, which showed up with a different colour to the car they were following - turned out to be duff info from the manufacturer.

R. Murphy ( snipped-for-privacy@murphy9100.fsnet.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

By the dealer.

It's fairly straightforward - You fill in form V55/5, and send it - together with MOT/Insurance/Tax Money/First born's Inside Leg Measurement/2Kg of Rocking Horse Droppings - to DVLA, who promptly lose them all. Then DVLA find the least convenient time in your whole life to invite you to have the vehicle glanced at in passing at your local DVLA office, before you can sit in a queue for six hours to get the registration number allocated.
