VW Passat- High Pitch Whistling

I have a TDI Passat 2001 that has just developed a high pitched whistle when the engine is put under a bit of strain (acceleration). It has also started to smoke at the same time(White smoke).

  1. Can i keep on driving this car without permanent damage.
  2. Anyone got any ideas to what is causing it ?

Many Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some ideas

I'd _guess_ you've lost an air hose somewhere.

The whistle is the air being forced through the turbo. Because the air is escaping downwind of the MAF, the ECU thinks that "X" amount of air is getting into the engine, so is putting in "Y" amount of fuel.

But, because the pipe's broken, you're only getting "Z" amount of air in, which makes "Y" amount of fuel too much, which explains the white smoke.

I'd get it fixed ASAP, because you're wasting fuel, and _potentially_ sucking in dust, dirt, rocks, small animals etc via the missing hose, rather than the air filter.

It'll probably be obvious where the hose has fallen off.
