Yeah. Been there. I had a good old friend for ten, maybe 11 years but, as you say, she started getting a bit tatty. I noticed that the power was dropping off, she just didn't get up to speed so quickly as before. Plus incidental expenses started to rise. She got more demanding and I had to weigh the various benefits of keeping her or trading her in. The decision point came when she started complaining about my drinking. It was about then I chucked her in and took up with the girl at the offie and haven't looked back since.

it is when the maintenance/running costs get higher than a replacement that you change, UNLESS there is actually a good reason to change. Write it all down on paper and work it out.

Had my car for nearly 10 years and now, and need to swap as its 'burning' around 2 litres of oil a week [1] (about 200 to 250 miles). Body on the car showing its age, and 3 MOT failures in the last three years on various bits now make it unecomical to sort out the engine (rebore or recon) - also looking for a Focus.

Looking tatty may not matter too much so long as it's running well and isn't going to start costing 'lots' of money.

I guess the only real answer is 'it depends' ... ;)

I have a 14+ year old Discovery and whilst tatty is now just about run-in .. which I won't be changing anytime soon .. The wifes car changes when it needs more than £200 spending on it as we normally only buy cheap anyway .. ;)

I don't personally know any owners who were not delighted with their Focus, but last time I was kicking tyres in the dealers I had to tell the sales Hexecutive who collared me that there are a whole bunch of things I don't need on the newer models. Automatic lights, automatic wipers, etc, and indicator repeaters on the outer tip of the side mirrors which means that if you touch mirrors (as you do), there's a dismantling job to replace them instead of a bit of rubbing clean.

1. Last year I spunked money on a pukka Toyota cambelt kit and w'pump and it's good to go for another ten years. It's still the most comfortable old shitheap I've ever paid money for. So, horses for courses - there's not a single piece of electronic trickery on the SOJC to go wrong, just mechanical controls - and I expect the bodywork will go awry first, if I let it slide.

Thanks for all your responses guys. Part of me wants to keep her, I enjoy having the bonnet up now and again! Shes a 1.8 diesel (non turbo) and still gives me 50+ mpg. Got one hundred and ten thousand on the clock. Been under her tonight will need new outer drive shaft gaiters and a new exhaust (down pipe to cat) Probably need some welding done to the sill (not too much) but apart from that I change the oil etc regular and she always starts on the turn of the key. However the misses is now feed up with the coarse ride and what's me to change!
