Was this the 3 cylinder one developed from an outboard motor? I thought the police had them on trial here at about the same time the variable transmission first came in.
IIRC the thoughts behind it was to make a cheap, light and powerful engine whose rate of pollution did not change with age. The lubrication metering being constant, so there was no chance of someone driving a car with a shagged out engine that puffed smoke every time a gear was changed.
BTW the biggest and most economical engine made is a two stroke (with
aero engine, for its day.
