Have a crack in my windscreen that will need sorting before the MOT.
I have no insurance of any kind to cover this.
Anyone recommend a cheap way to get it replaced near Gatwick, Surrey.
Anyone estimate a cost?

Usually about £150.
Is that all? My insurance company state that that it's one of their best selling points - no excess but they'll crank your premium up next year to pay.
If it's only £150 then it would be cheaper to change companies!

Who's your insurance company? Most don't count it as a claim.
DirectLine.

I've had a couple replaced over the past few years and both were £150. One was a bonded one on a Sierra and the other a boggo standard one on a Capri. Autoglass both times "on-site" and both £150 as it wasn't covered by the insurance.

What gets me is the difference between the amount on the invoice to the insurance company and the cash price if you ring around. I've been quoted under £100 for the Montego, but seen an insurance company billed for nearly twice that.
Ah yes. IME, DirectLine _do_ load premiums for glass claims. Not a _lot_,= =20 but I've always looked at about =A320-25 per SP30 and =A320-25 per glass cl= aim.

And I'm sure there's a £50 excess if they have to replace the windscreen (or is it £50 if they can fix it without replacing the screen?) So £50 + £25 load + whatever else they load in the future doesn't seem like such a good deal after all. Better than £150, I suppose.

Yep. £295 to an insurance company discounted to £100 to me as a private customer. My flabber was ghasted.
Interestingly all the quotes (10) were between 94 and 100 + vat except RAC who were 128 all in.
I managed to pursuade the company of choice to do it for 100 quid all in.
As with everything in life, phone round and haggle!!!
Interestingly a tinted strip at the top is cheaper than clear!

According to the previous owner, it was a fiver more for the Monty.
Insurance companies will get a retro-discount for volume from the fitting companie's head office.
