No it isn't, it's a reverse STN with a backlight.

Bloody thing's just disappeared completely - started the engine and there's just a blank space where the numbers should be. Any ideas?

It's an LED display.

Well that's taught me something, sort of, I've never even heard of an STN never mind a reverse one!

The message from "just andy" contains these words:

Super Twist Nematic display - it's a sort of LCD. Lit from behind it gives the impression of glowing numbers.

Still the fix is just a new bulb.( Same problem with the A^ temperature display, £87 from Audi, 12p for a new bulb & 2minutes soldering from Gees electrical)

Certainly is. Dashboard bulbs are a pain to get to - I guess that £87 is £70 labour, £4 bulb, then the VAT...

Err no, they only sell the bulb with the entire temperature display attached, that was the parts price! Access to the dash goes, pull steering wheel forwards & down, remove

1screw from trim, pull trim off, remove 5 screws from cluster, tilt forwards, under 5minutes total. As opposed to the officaial & Haynes instructions that tell you to remove wheel, airbag etc.

Heh - just tried that in ours, and yeah it goes completely black (comparitively - it's invisible on a sunny day)

Are the other instrument lights working? You may have knocked the instrument light dimmer control and adjusted it to its lowest setting. Its worth a look before taking any other action.

Hadn't thought of that. The fault was reported by the wife, so I'll check when she gets back later. The fault did occur immediately after she cleaned the car out and polished the dash....

This problem is cured by removing the fuse and putting it back in, sounds stupid but it works, trust me it happened to me at least twice

Which fuse is it please as looked online and getting really confused #womendriver Sarahmcdade

You need to give year, trim level, and engine size. There can be huge differences between things like fuse location.

There won't be a single fuse just for the odometer. Describe the fault you have in more detail in order to get help.
