ISO: Fix for loose spherical AC vents

Aug 11, 2007 3 Replies

I recently purchased a 99 Miata - my first. One nagging problem that's been driving me nuts in the hot weather we're experiencing in North Carolina is the little round AC vents that seem to have minds of their own. You set them like you want, then they just flop down to a useless position. Has anyone come up with a novel way to snug these up?

Thanks,

Geary Morton

Go to miata.net in the garage section. All the answers and suggestions can be found there.

First try setting the eyeball vents to their desired position and push in on the center firmly. If that doesn't hold, I've had success with rotating the eyeball all the way to one side and gluing a small piece of felt to it - like the felt dots you put under knick knacks so they won't scratch your furniture - then rotating the eyeball back to where you want it.

I got my Miata with 15k miles on it and it already had the little pieces of felt. The vents still drift down to the floor and I'm continually re-adjusting them. I saw the credit card trick for removing the vents on miata.net. I'm going to pop them out and add felt to both sides.

It's funny that on such an otherwise perfect car where every detail has been scrutinized that these stupid little eyeballs were never fixed.
