Hey Joe, I just bought a 91 used Miata and I too was in the same dileama. I took advice about increase performance without braking the bank, so the K&N filter cone or drop in is a must, then changed spark plugs to Bosch Plat 4, air intake turn signals(looks sporty as well helps keep engine cool, which is even cooler), modified air intake system and that is it for now. But I am under a budget but if you have money to burn, then I heard the forced cold intake or turbo...check out miata.net for other options.

So many seem to be so critical:

Lights-off buzzer: how would I live, and survive, without it? Rear-lowering springs: how could I show my car without them? Sheepskin seat covers: long trips would be horrible without them. Compass: how could I get where I am going without it? Supercharger, how could I let overpowered trucks slip in front of me? What a silent world without radio line-ins with MP3 player attached! Winking headlights, how could *anyone* be without??

And those are just some functional *essentials*. Just because they do not directly affect function does not mean I could live without my BSP chrome fuel filler lid, KGW instrument cluster, no-zip glass rear window top, chrome windshield sprayers, BBS wheels, ...

Forced induction before better brakes and tires? Never. Go slow fast first then go fast. Why stop at one? My Miata is up to 2X what I paid for it in ugrades. Not many can follow.

If you bought the Miata for what it is, a great handling sports car, then Lanny is absolutely correct, new shocks, new tires, and an alignment. If you bought the Miata because it looks cool and will impress the girls than go for all the shiny bits that don't do anything to improve the performance of the car. If you bought the Miata, but really wanted a hopped up Japanese pocket rocket, than go for the forced induction options (e.g., turbo or supercharger). Most of the other changes such as cold air induction, etc. really don't make much of a difference. So, as you can see, the choice really depends on you. I've been perfectly happy with my Miata which is 100% original except for a cup holder instead of the ash tray since I drink (non-alcoholic beverages while driving) but don't smoke.
