Rev counter

I've often found that simply melting the solder (with a tinned iron so it puts new solder on) revives rev counters. And other instruments (which tend not to go wrong quite so often).

Is it mechanical or electrical?

It seems to be mechanical. I have put a squared piece of cable in the end and ran it up with a drill to simulate the drive cable but the needle isn't moving at all! (and yes, I did run it the correct way)

MGA ! I think they have a mechanical tacho as did the first of the MGB

Think that you will have to get a repair done or pull it apart your self

- its similar to a speedo and see if it has dry oil inside which will not allow the needle drive to move.

I agree with me. That sounds stupid, wish he had a different posting name. The fault is probably a tight spindle bearing on the needle. A strip and clean should work. From memory, speedometers are not too difficult to strip. just fiddly. Be careful not to damage the spring that returns the needle. That is part of the calibration. Once damaged, the reading could be way out.
