Stripped out and with the speedlimiter defeated, I reckon that would be quite a fun bit of kit to punt round there.

Not as much fun as the 106 will be though... in fact I might take a trip over there this summer once that's finished and has upgraded brakes etc.

Capri 2 litre- preferably a 1.6 that's had a 2L shoved in it as the diff ratios are lower. The handling and the lack of brakes will scare him shitless. He'll have the time of his life.

I've had a couple of Capris. I agree it'll be time time of his life. On a damp 'ring, it might also be the last time of his life too...:-)

Golf GTi, Pug 205GTi, you'll even get a reasonable running Saab900T16 for that money all of which will be more fun than the scorpio or V6 Omega Tubs. If he wants a big tub, get a V6 Citroen XM. They're dirt cheap and handle fantastically

My POV is that there's a decent sized engine with a good potential for weight loss. I could recommend MK2 Golfs all day to him, but I don't reckon you'd get one up to it for £700.

I can sort of see your point but you're starting off with such a heavy car that you'll have so much weight to lose :-)

There are MKII GTis around for that price. There's 3 H Plate 1.8s and and E-plater all near my brother (up North though) for less than £600 all look in reasonable nick with T&T.. There's also a 1992 900 Turbo for £695, all on autotrader near BB4

I've looked at a few cheap Saab 900s before. They're invariably pretty ratty at that price. I don't doubt that you'd find a good MK2 eventually for £600, but I don't want to go lookign at them with him :P. 405 Mi16 could be a good idea as he'll probably be scared by the crazy suspension.

Rear wheel drive is a good idea, powerful is also good - those are long long straights.

If you opted for something lighter then I'm with Carl and the mark one MR2 idea. Just hope that it doesn't rain on the way there.

Or a XR4x4.

Get a sunroof model, and you'll be fine!! Or buy a tube of silicone sealant :)

Yes. My mates selling his for £600, it's got T&T and is mechanically sound with SH but it's looks shabby and the interiors pretty manky too. Drives great though :-)

Aie they're not absolutely quick, but if you drive 'em such that they feel nose heavy, you need more steering lock and throttle...

Go for the 405, but not in x4 format. It'll out handle most of the stuff already discussed, and if it's a Mk1 1.9, they're quite light and quite pokey down the straights as well.
