Really? Explain why Apple doesn't have the same rate of return. After all, Mac OS X is equally as alien to Windows as Linux and the desktop looks quite similar to Gnome.
One would expect a version being run natively to be quicker...

Hmm, well I am doing the same, as it happens. The kind of things I am noticing are occasional small delays between clicking on a cell, after updating the contents of another, and the cursor moving. The delay is less than a second, but there is *no* perceptable delay doing the same in excel under parallels.
There are similar effects under all the office apps, on all the macbooks I run. It's all still useable, but feels sluggish.
I've just tried here - 2.4GHz Core2 17" MBP, no delay noticeable.
The other problem you mentioned is a non-issue for me, I don't use WMF because they're s*it. The only time it becomes an issue is when I get a PowerPoint presentation from someone who has littered the presentation with awful Windows Metafile Graphics.
Because Netbooks are cheap. Apple is very expensive.
People who buy Apple do it deliberately.
People who buy the cheap netbooks are after a cheap PC and can often only just cope with Windows.
Not to mention the Apple hardware monoculture allows them to have the same level of driver support as the Windows manufacturer clout does. Linux is improving rapidly but is sadly still the poor relation in terms of driver support for modern kit.
IIRC, the Mac Office team is completely separate to the Windows Office Team, and the codebase is completely different under the covers.
You may have noticed that Apple tends to give its drivers back to the Linux community. The printer support in particular has improved markedly since Apple obtained CUPS and made as many CUPS drivers available as possible under GPL.
There was a horrible time when they used the same p-code. A Horrible, crash prone, underperforming time.

Yup, why most of the developers at our place, all proper "unix" heads have had iMacs or Macbooks, because they can do everything they can in Linux/*BSD/Irix/Unixware/Solaris without being so restricted on desktop performance/compatability like they might be on a traditional workstation, and none of the arseache of wasting time configuring the environment before you can even think about developing anything.

You must be the one and only person outside of the MS Publicity monster who doesn't think that.
I use it, I live with it, and I work arround it's faults. But I know it is s*it.
I didn't say it was perfect, just that its less of a stinking pile of s*it than Linux.
As with the recent election choices, it's a case of choosing the best of a bad bunch.
But...Vista has been OK for me since SP1.
