This afternoon I opened up the bonnet of my van (98/S Master 2.5D) as there was some steam coming from the engine bay. It was coming from somewhere around the engine, but the temp gauge didn't say anything was wrong.
So why was there steam? Free KitKat for the first correct answer.

because the temp gauge was broken? because there was a puddle of water somewhere? because....... it had an under hood kettle?

Washer fluid dripping onto the exhaust manifold?

It's got the washer jets integrated into the wipers, and one of the hoses had come off the dsitributor plastic thing, which drips onto the area around the engine - exhaust manifold a highly likely option.
