Help...

A mate of mine is looking to sell his ex taxi Skoda Octavia 1.9 SDI - the

68bhp one. He has given it what Quentin Willson used to call "cloth of gold maintenance". No expense spared. Would have to be the slowest car ever, and I have an almost overwhelming urge to buy it. Poverty spec and all. He has offered me first shout at auction pricing.

Even worse again. I think I've just bought a Midas at some time in the last hour. It was one of those conversations that just sort of tails off with an air of inevitability about it. I know I'll buy it, he knows I'll buy it - we just haven't said as much yet. We just have to agree a price - how very vulgar.

So. Golf Ragtop, Ibiza, 0.5 of a Saab 9000, Sylva, Midas, Skoda. WTF is happening here. It's almost outwith my control.

damn a fellow octy owner in the making

do it if its cheap enough

we've got a sdi on a 51 plate taxi here, 278k on the clock only things we've had problems with was a gearbox at 170k and the leccy window switches.

also got a young pup of a tdi at a mere 74k tbh in the real world theres not a lot between them

"Oh no, what's the wife gonna say?"

Slow Diesel chuggers are handy tools really. I never thought I'd be able to put up with my ~74bhp Diesel 306 Estate for very long after having the Silky 6 Clarton Cruise Liner and then the BX rocketship, but as a tool for getting to work it's been fine. My Polo has languished as a result of the 306 being so suited to the driving I've been doing unfortunately.

My current state of unwell means I won't be needing a car much for a while. I've been thinking of something little, perhaps 2 seater and sporty when I do get out.

Enjoy the Midas. I found that compared to the BX, the 306 takes about the same time to get to work, handled better and the inability to nip up to 90 on the straights on the private test track proved to lower my fuel consumption to about 1/3.

Funny you should say that, I almost never bother to hammer my 306. It's the 95bhp pre-HDi turbo diesel

*cough* 92Bhp... /dervman

Hmm. I have the 1.8td in my old pug 205 and I thrash that everywhere - it just encourages it, makes me do it in fact... It's got to have one of the highest grin/£ ratios of any car, I reckon.

I just re-read my post, I'm on a quite high dose of co-codamol at the moment, I don't know if I was making much sense.

I used to have a BX GTi, now I've got a 306. Because the 306 can't nip to 90 on the straights, and the 306's engine doesn't reward being caned. I might have thought it was slower, but the 306 handles a lot better. The result is the 306 uses about 1/3 of the fuel of the BX and gets me to work in pretty much exactly the same time (7 or 8 miles of balls-in-back-pocket back roads, 5 or 6 A-road and 2 or 3 in town. All before the heavy traffic builds so I can almost always overtake if I need to till I get to town.

My BX was 1.9 petrol and the 306 is 1.9 NA Diesel. That probably made the biggest single difference to fuel economy. (c: I've been getting about 40-45mpg from mine, the BX's engine was much more entertaining though. Plus, nothing stops like a hydropneumagic braking system. (c:
