I'm liking a lot, but would structural strength be an issue?

Indeed. The market for 15 year old cars is not one driven by residuals, it's 'does it have a ticket' and 'is it likely to kill me'....

507bhp V10 is utter shit?

This is true. I tend to buy my cars when they're at least 10 years old nowadays, but I deal with new cars all the time. It's my job.

*Some* BMWs are very very good cars indeed. I'd happily own some of the older BMWs, and not just because they're cheap. There are a few older BMWs I'd absolutely love to own, the 3.0 CSL being one, the original M3 and M5 being a couple more examples. It's just the newer ones, as a rule, tend to be utter crap.

I think I'll be sticking with my old Fords for quite a while yet. I'd have another Cosworth, but they're getting to be quite valuable.

Heh, the M5 has always been an exception.. even I'll admit that and I despise modern BMWs.

It was the 540i I had that was the final nail in the BMW coffin for me.. that and the "styling" of the new 5.

I'm worried - it's growing on me....

New 6 series is still the ugliest car on the road though.

*all* E30's?

I think not. We could comfortasbly get 3k for ours. more if we held out.

FFS if we took it and broke it we'd get more than a grand.

So you dont like new BM's? fine. great.

so why the big rant about E30's?

ours is in showroom condition, low mileage, subtle mods full m-spec leathers, throttlebodies etc etc.

the list goes on..

but of course it's not worht a grand :o)

don't bank on it.

I know I've only been driving 3 years, but I'm 35, and FC insurance on=20 the Saab was just shy of =A3500, and would have been =A3403 if I renewed=20 this year (with 62% no claims). On the Celica (14 years old) 2.0 Turbo=20 FC insurance I'm looking at about =A3500-510 with current insurer.

Comparing with what confused.com can offer, that is about =A3200 lower=20 than anyone else quoted. I was looking at =A3600 from my insurer, or =A3700=

- 900 from confused for a Prelude gen 4 VTEC,=20 or an other example (didn't try my insurer) from confused. 200SX =A3900 3000GT/GTO =A31200 Skyline R32 no one on Confused.com would quote me.

I wasn't looking for business use, just an average of 12k miles a year,=20 no accidents, claims, or convictions.

No, you're living in YOUR world of used car prices - that was Doug's point :)

*claps*

exactly right. You cant class you biased view of prices for cars you personally dislike as their "value".

thats their value to *you* not their retail value.

That's bollocks.

There's a hell of a lot of overpriced s**te out there that people insist on paying silly money for.

However, if you look around, you can often get said cars at their real value.

I've done enough buying of cars (and had my fingers burned a couple of times) to know the value of 10 year old plus kit.

Bwahahaha.

You could _ask_ £3k, but you wouldn't get it.

The exceptions to the rule are absolute minters in factory trim / condition with low miles, good tourers and M3s.

But Mason's could well be one of those.

Still not worth £3k, though.

Perhaps if it's a very late E30 325i Touring, when they were running parallel with the E36 saloon, but nothing else (discounting the M3 which are still well worth the asking of £8k plus)

I've been googling today, and remembered what a monstrosity your E30 is..... would those offers of £4k come from chavs who couldn't flash the cash if asked?

I mean, it's a kevved up shed by all accounts with it's 17" wheels and flip paint......

We know it's not, Peter. It's a kevved up shed with a crap paintjob.
