I really must do something about the GT4's Intercooker.

The other day after a short drive in the rain the bonnet vent was steaming.

After a good run, and then letting it stand for a couple of minutes you can't put your hand inside the vent because of the heat.

I might try toasting a sandwich on it one day. or I could locate a small narrow IC and make my own front mount (must be small and narrow because I don't have the CS front bumper, and I want to get the Aircon working for the summer if I can). And plumb in my own slightly long but surely cooler FMIC pipework.

Try a renalt 21 intercooller. There are two, one is quite long and thin. Will probally fit nicely. I can give you dimentions if you want. Will flow at least 200 hp, might need two.

Timmmayyy

Dimensions and flow details would be great.

I need at least 200+, because the car is standard 205BHP with the sandwich toaster on.

Bringing charge temps down (wrapping the boost pipes after moving the IC) should free a few more.

Sure it's the intercooler!!?!

I've never known an intercooler to actually get that hot. Is it broken?

Mind you I find it weird when cars have the intercooler on top of the engine, like PSA 1.9 TD, Impreza, etc.

This one is nice

Cossie ones are also skinny and quite long. There was a guy on ebay who had loads of brand new OEM intercoolers for various cars and he sold them really really cheaply. He was in Leamington Spa. I only found him cos he had some random Lancia bits for sale too.

Wedge an old trainer underneath the right foot pedal, works wonders.

Yep, it is the intercooler.

Really small, parked right behind the turbo, right over the rocker cover.

Not the best pic, but small cooler badly placed

Was thinking about taking a 900 T16 cooler froma scrappy, turning it on it's side and front mounting that.

Should just about fit.

That might just work but it is a little long.

Been told that even 2wd cossie ones are a little too deep to get in with the aircon rad and standard bumper.

2wd Cossie item is totally the wrong shape. (I've been looking into a bigger intercooler/s for the estate)

RS500 one is probably nearer in shape, but it's also huge. About the same size as a coolant radiator.

temps get up, even after a little bimble arround town. not overheating, probably not fully heatsoaking, but I haven't done tuning of it yet.

the Sainz edition, and the ST205 both got liquid charge coolers instead of Air to Air.

Like this one? or is that from an Escort?

I considered a Landy TDi 5 one like this

Instead of the dinky standard top mont one

It's only about the same size as the Saab one, but right over the engine.

Top mounted intercoolers might as well be called "inter-heaters" they regularly get this hot.

Sorry it is dark now can`t measure till tomorrow, I think max air flow is

220hp. Think size is 2 * 3 inches and 1.5 feet long.

yup which most MR2 turbo owners nice :) know a guy who has uprated boost with charge cooler and other minor bits hitting 300 odd bhp in a early MR2 turbo 220 standard :)

Hmm that might be a little too small, but better than what I have. Was thinking of something (including the tanks) of arround 500-650mm x 150mm x100mm

Thinking of doing a little scrappy hunting before winter really sets in, if I can't ebay something first.

charge cooler and

Hoping a filter, decat, and eventually a mongoose system (can't get close to affording right now) Plus an FMIC will make a noticable difference to build on.

Get a Group A Rally water to air. My mate has one on his GT4 and it's great. When he drag races it he puts ice cubes in the water to get even better intake temps.

I have a water spray on my WRX cooler. Its an STI one so it is a bit better than stock. The only reason they top mounted them is so the rally cars wouldn't f*ck them up every time they hit a rock or big stick. On the road front mount is the way to go.

Was just going to suggest a charge cooler. IIRC the supercharged VW's had chargecoolers rather than intercoolers - should be fairly easy to find.

Sorting the breathing on a Turbo car, has much less of an effect than on an NA car. No matter how crap your intake, the Turbo will flow enough air to make the 1bar (or whatever) - it just has to work slightly harder to do so, but the rise in intake temps is negligable. Same on the way out - the Turbo is by far the biggest restriction in the exhaust - once the air is past it, it makes little difference what else it encounters.

If you want more performance without raising the boost, then you need to lower the intake temp significantly. A large front-mount intercooler is the way to go about it - you'll have to spend some money if you want a decent setup though !

Spend the filter + decat + mongoose money with Allard, and get a nice big front-mount intercooler fitted.
