I think after discussing on the retro-rides forums...

And then the coilovers? And the decent seats that you don't fall out of round corners?

Strange. The one I had was a rusted up shiteheap and so are most others. I occasionally see an immaculate old man's one. Fuck knows why anyone would pick one instead of a Sierra.

To be fair, everything you've owned has been a rusted up shitheap :-)

I'd have one over a Sierra - but I'd have a pedal bike over either... (excluding some form of Cosworth as long as I didn't have to pay for it).

He's right you know. For some reason 340 (and not generally the 360) are becoming an increasingly popular drift car. Not so many for rallying yet though.

Which is good for me as loads of aftermarket parts are being developed. When I first got my 340 there was virtually nothing - just things you could use from other models. Now you can get dampers, springs, polybushes and lowering blocks off the shelf. Various ingenius setups have been pioneered including front vented brakes using Impreza calipers, rear disc conversion,

5 link suspension on the rear, strengthened front suspension. Not to mention engine conversions including 1.7T, 1.8 16v and 2.0 in the 340s, and the 2.3 (turbo and n/a) conversions into the 360s. In development at the moment is possibly uprated manifolds, sump/'box guards, front strut braces, engine mounts, rear ARB and rollcages. Which is great for people like me as I'm getting access to parts that are certainly out of my engineering capabilities, and definately out of my wallet's capabilities to have made as a one-off. And it also means that my rusty old Volvo, with all it's rare accessories, is hopefully gaining a bit of money from the £250 I paid for it :)

Also, let's face it, there is just something cool about drifting in a SO Volvo.

Having owned an XR4x4 and a 360 GLT or 2, I'd definately take the 360. The XR4x4 is a heavy old dog with a s**te engine (although I still like em :)). At least the 360 is much more nimble, even if the standard 2.0 can't keep up in the power stakes. Much more potential there too (unless you look at a Cossie, which isn't really comparable).
