I think after discussing on the retro-rides forums...

I have an idea what my next car will be if I can find one in black or very dark grey.

A Volvo 740 or 760 Turbo diesel Saloon. Saloon because they are cheaper than the wagons.

740 because they are fairly comfy, bricklike Diesel for economy (and the bio/veg fuel options) Turbo so I can still play with tuning. RWD because I miss it.

So, I know the main difference between the 740 and 760 diesels is the intercooler or lack of. But what is the VAG LT TD van engine like for longevity and performance? I know it will be nice simple mechanical injection, but that can still be tuned.

Quite fancy playing with the "Science" of biodiesel from scrap chip fat making. And if you use the right stuff you can even sell the glycerine to craft type natural soap makers. How tricky is it to get the hazardous waste licence needed to collect it? The conversion, re-esterfying and washing process is fairly quick nowadays. And the Duty situation isn't as scary as it sounds.

Seriously, drive one. A relative has one, and my Dad borrowed it to run me down to Heathrow. They're shit. Only redeeming features are that they're cheap and they do high mileages.

Dont bother with the TD. They're rubbish.

A (turbo) Red Block 7/900 will do twice the mileage and arent vastly more juicey... A properly set up and slightly tuned B230FT will give an easy

200bhp anyhow.

The VW TD units go bang for fun.

My mum had a 1989 740/60 (whats the difference?) turbo. It was 2.3 and had something like 183bhp, no idea about engine codes or whatever. That was back in 1992ish and the fastest car i'd ever been in at the time!

760 got a better spec and an intercooler from the start. the 740 didn't have the intercooler initially.

Would consider it, but might be a little pricey and too new. Fancy some really bargain old man miles, not the Swedish ambasadorial entry into bangernomics.

Cheap and do high miles you say? Sounds right. Also they run on veg oil as a diesel.

How was the comfort on this shit one? Not too fussed about stock handling. If I buy one cheap enough, slam it on coil overs, stiffen the rear with a brace and ARB and just slide the corners in a cloud of smoke. Free up the breathing, open up the exhaust and turn up the boost and adjust the fueling. Nice. Drifting in a slick of my own diesel and smelling like Harry Ramsdens.

But far pricier to run if tey won't run on chip fat/bio. Would love a petrol turbo but can't pay the price. If I wasn't Forced induction fun it will need to be dirty turbo.

ISTR someone saying (PeteM?) that 760s have independent rear suspension, meaning it'll handle a lot better than the live rear axle or whatever it is they're called. Don't know if that's all 760s, mind, or just the 760 turbo (petrol) ones.

Or how about spending a little more and getting an 850 TDi with the 5-pot Audi engine? About £1500 or so should get a reasonable one by the looks of it.

But then, a 740/760 TD is virtually pennies......

FWD though.=20

That is what I fancy, cheap as chips and running on the leftovers :) And RWD is what I really miss. Mind you room to move house is nice too,=20 if I end up getting a wagon.

I don't know man, I think I'd steer clear of craft soap makers - I saw this documentary about one fella who kept waking up in strange places with black eyes. I think it sends you funny in the head.

Does look quite tidy. But I fancy RWD. Do 9** models go so cheap.

Pricey ? Aye right enough, you might have to go to as much as about 5 or 600 quid....

Ok, possibly a bit more, but you know what I mean.

What about a nice 9000 2.3 Full pressure Turbo on LPG ?

Said that last bit in jest and then actually 'looked' on ebay. And, lo and behold....

Because nobody really wants a diesel.....

Not really.

It amuses me he puts 'no muppets' in his advert when he's asking that sort of money ;-)

So, should be easy enough the get a "fair" price from them when they come straight the "workshop"

Anyone who doesn't snap up his BIN is a fool. You could get three times that for the car on the ownersclub forum.

You could get most of the BIN price back just for the interior if it is in good nick.

FTP manuals are just over 200bhp so it should entertaining. And the economy should be OK with the LPG. Even the mileage will be OK.

No, that was "Dark City".

Yes, but Saab anoraks are even more stupid that VW and Alfa anoraks when it comes to paying ridiculously inflated prices for shonky old tat.
