Better than *no* 4x4 system though. Especially when the other alternative generally wrong wheel drive, old basic car, or being told it isn't worth owning a "cheap" end luxury RWD older modern car.

I know I could try to find a Cressida, or a Laurel and generally it would be fine. But while the Lexus parts would be pricey, they would be available.

Pisstaking aside, a Mk3 Fiesta diesel is a good un if all you want is dirt cheap transport for commuting in - the seats are half decent as well on the later ones, and 60mpg is the norm.

Sell the Octavia, buy a sub £500 Fester... £1500 to spunk on 'something for the weekend', Sir.

Or, if your limits on taste know no bounds, a Maestro TD is both comfy and economical... and worth f*ck all these days.

Or... if outright economy isn't your main goal, my mate bought a pop up headlight 323F 1.6 off of a friend of Ashtraymans a month or so ago - I've used it for my commute a couple of times, and can't praise it enough - a bit noisy at 80ish crusing, but it's comfy, very well built and does 36mpg with me bollocking it from time to time and spending loads of other time stuck in traffic.

All that, and it's really well spec'ed - leccy windows all round, leccy sunroof, mirrors, ABS etc. - I'd happily have one even now, as my sole car.

Comfiest car I've ever known was my old 405. They're cheap as chips these days, handle well, have decent specs and seem to go forever.

The old 900 3 door was the same. Tardis like inner dimensions, but only just big enough (long but narrow) to have the necessary presence.

I like larger cars they give the "size" safety. People notice you in a way they never did in say a Favorit or the punto I did my learning in.

I'm thinking of that, but having had two, both good and bad in their own ways, I want to try something else "luxury" first and then come back when I can appreciate it.

The Celica felt modern and it was nice. Going back to the C900 felt like stepping into a timewarp even though it was a two year newer car. Took a while to get used to. I want to try something extravagent while I'm still young enough to a have a pulse to get racing. And yes there are smaller/lighter/faster/cheaper to run cars, they tend to be either expensive insurance as they are "Sports" car, or tend to be popular with the chav monkeys as they are in the banger class of motor.

Sounds about right. Add a few SDP miles and you're at 500 miles/week easy, that's 25 gallons, 5300 quid/yr. Run it for three years, that's 70k miles, at least 4 services at 150 quid maybe, and factor in the odd expensive repair, we're talking a TCO of 17000 quid.

Vovo S80 / S60 Diesel. Economy, performance, low fuel bills, tragic first owner depreciation. Everything you need.

Failing that get a dervy style saab - it's not actually that bad.

Thankfully not. Somehow GM got hold of a good diesel engine and made it slow and noisy.

Sounds quite reasonable for a combination home from home and high speed mobile recliner chair, when you put it like that. ;)

Hmmm, Omegas and me don't go well, too fragile.

First one, 2.0 auto, bit slow, tensioners fired on the motorway under braking, scared crap out of me. Second one, 2.2 auto, bit slow, tyre fell off rim joining the M1. Third one, 2.6 auto, had "interesting" moment that resulted in rear axle failure...

Lexuses. Proper nouns normally pluralise in the standard manner, no apostrophe. And it's not a latin word.

Aye... my 406 is very comfy.

I maintain 406s are/were the most well made Peugeots ever. I don't have knowledge of those old ones Adrian mentioned though that they all like in some loser country.

It's a shame they entrusted things like the clocks to that purveyor of technological disasters, 'Sagem' - like most other 406TDs of the same era, mine has a rev counter and fuel gauge that work when they feel like it.

Seeing as how everyones brand of choice is seeming to be the first answer I am going to suggest a Subaru Legacy/Liberty turbo wagon. Comfy, luxury, practical, fast and economical. And for your back I suggest getting into a gym and exercising it and dropping all the weight you can.
