OT: - Modifications post (rambling)

This week I have mostly been buying throttle bodies (for the sylva).

Oh, and another engine.

These are all ebay specials of course.

The 36mm throttle bodies should be sound for the 1.8 Zetec and I will run it on Megasquirt with the Extra firmware.

Haven't bought the ECU parts yet, but that will be soon.

Anyway, spend so far.

Throttle bodies - £19.99

1.8 Zetec - £0.99

So that's me up to almost £21, must keep a close eye on the budget.

Still have the ZX10 engine which won't fit because of a disagreement with a chassis tube. I have begrudgingly accepted that the chassis tube probably has priority. Now I need to find a home for the ZX10 motor, unless I hold onto it for that mid engined idea I have in my head.

Then I will need to find a home for the old 1300 xflow that's currently resting in the Sylva chassis. In days gone by, I would have chucked this out, but much to my disbelief, there's actually a little bit of money in them these days, so that will go on the bay as a 1p no reserve special.

About the hairdresser spec Golf, there is nothing to report.

It's a shame that it gets expensive now, especially the part that=20 relocates the thermostat.

I'm not prejudiced. I hate everyone equally.

Ah, I guess you have the space behind the motor. On most classic Fords, there's not the luxury so the water rail needs to be changed.

is that a whole zetec engine for 99p?

Swine, I thought I'd done well with a Zetec and all the bits to RWD it for £50 and bike carbs for 99p :) Nicely done :)

Yes indeed. They're worthless nowadays, as nobody really destroys them so there isn't a great need for them.

Hehe awesome :)

99p engines for the win!

LOL i bought the wrong car when i bought a BM then! should have bought something with a zetec, turbo charged it and kept an eye on ebay for when it popped haha

Hmm.

So is it cheaper to hire/snaffle a hoist and swap out the complete engine instead of getting my front crank seal oil leak/timing belt/clutch fixed on a 2.0 Mondeo?

How many pipes and wires actually need to be taken off to do an engine swap?

I guess the problem is that you don't know the pedigree of the new engine and it might have exactly the same issues as the current one...

How much all in ?

Because I know you're a 'maker' rather than a 'spender' :-)

You can get brand new blacktops for around £650. I know of a few people who have stripped their zetec down for a rebuild prior to fitting it into their locost only to find that it didn't really need doing. You then have the cost of the gaskets to put it all back together.

So now, what they generally do is but it and fit it. If it breaks after hammering it (which is not really common), stick another in - they're not worth rebuilding.

Errr, off the top of my head, with lots of stuff conveniently forgotten about.

Money out

Engine, sump, waterpump, EDIS bits and spare head £50 (ebay) Carbs 99p (+ £12 P+P ebay) Drill bits for jetting £2 Steel for manifold £5 Silicon hose joining carbs manifold £10 Assorted silicon hoses/steel pipe ~£50-£60 Throttle cable £3 Clutch £15 Antifreeze, filter, plugs and oil £40 Exhaust manifold £10 scrappers (dodgy stock cast thing) Spigot bearing £12 Starter £15

Money in

Old engine £200 Old carb/manifold/filter £35 Old ex manifold £10 Spare zetec head £10 EDIS bits £15 Starter £15 Timing trigger wheel with steel crank pulley £25 A quality street tin full of syringes of "I can't believe it's not lead" (or whatever) fuel additive £15

Free stuff

Megajolt (already owned) Exhaust (butchered to fit) Water log/rail (made up) Engine mounts (used rubbers from old mounts with new weldy bits)

I can't be arsed working it out, 'cos to be honest there'll be loads I've forgotten, and the way my brain works is to forget the bad stuff, so I'd imagine I'll have shelled out more than I've written, but you get the general idea ;)

It always amazes me how long things like an engine change take, it's the making bits to fit that takes the time. I've just got to keep my itchy fingers off it and keep it in one piece 'til next Summer is over ;)

Jeeez, that's cheap. I need to get into this kit car game!! I actually nearly bought a Locost this week with a Volvo 2.3T engine (the 7/900 redblock type), but common sense got the better of me as I didnt have a trailer to go get it. If it had been closer the 850 would be on ebay right now :)

And the bloke you nearly bought it off is very very knowledgable about the old volvo lumps as well.

Not that I know the car you're talking about - much :-)

He is indeed. I know of him through the Volvo 300 forum.

Look liked good fun from from the video I saw of it
