OT: Win XP Time Slices

Hugely off topic, but...

I've just managed to get an old Windows 9x game working on my Windows XP game, X-Com: The Enemy Unknown.

Except this game was written with a 386 in mind, maybe a 486, so it runs waaay too fast on my Centrino set up here.

Does anybody know of an application that won't just reduce the task priority, but will reduce the time the processor spends on the application? Maybe gives it a smaller slice of the twin core pies?

I dont think its easily possible. It would need the games code to be real time as in bios time corrected. Old stuff just ran at the speed the cpu could run the code. You would need the scource code and mod it then recompile and stuff...

Do they not do emulators for old games to be played on XP. I know they did them for W95 & W98. Mike.

Dunno - but when it comes to gaming - I've scored a Nintendo Wii - anyone wanna buy it :-) ?

try right clicking the game icon then doing properties then under compatabilty run it as something else. if not there is a retro game app somewhere that slows the game to the right speed but can't for f*ck remember what its called! used to use it for an old platform crappy game meself ages ago! :)

try a retro games site bound to come up!

Mod it? Careful, lad - you're almost going on topic there!

something called

CPUGRAB

should do it.

The score or the Wii? :-) Mike.

Gotcha, that's the kind of application.

CpuGrab nicks one processor core and uses up lots of processor cycles, so I need to run it twice :) with affinite locked to different cores to get the desired effect, which then of course consumes lots of battery power and produces this strange stuff called heat.

You know this Centrino notebook *never* produces heat unless I'm either watching a DVD or deliberately loading the processor! :p

On the PC theme, anyone wanna buy 2 x 256mb sticks DDR2 SODIMM Laptop Ram - PC2-5300 (333mhz). Came with a Dell Latitude D410 as standard fit, used with no problems at all for 6 months - selling due to the fact I've upgraded to 2gb for WoW reasons hehe :-)

Asking £35 inc registered post.

CPUKiller (Windows) moSlow (Dos) Though Dosbox dose the job relatively well. You could go over board and run windows 98 in a VirtualPC (2004 is free from Microsoft) then use Moslos or CPU killer in that.
