Peugeot for BMW

Bigger heavier cars can do more damage to other cars when you crash into them, therefore they cost more to insure.

This argument gets banded about here a lot. My experience is you never know, it depends so much on how the insurance pixies are looking at you on any particular day, I am 22 and I've found bigger cars only more expensive to insure when you are less than about 20 and/or a very new driver. Getting insurance on any vehicle in these circumstances isnt easy.

Bigger cars have higher insurance group ratings but are not necessarily more expensive to insure.

I didn't wanna be the first to say it :)

My 90bhp 405 can keep up with a 520i, i know its not quite the same, but i have less power and half the torque of your 406.

WTF???

If you're gonna turbo it, why not get something quicker to start with??? I wouldn't be surprised if the insurance on an aftermarket blown-325 was as much (or more) than an M3!

*cough* I knew that. Actually, the torque figure I gave was for the 1.8Td as well. The 1.9 produces 145 lbFt. Still, the 406 is, as you say a lardy tub (weighs about 1400kg, IIRC), so it isn't surprising that it is outdragged by a 320. A tweaked 110Hdi, or even better, a 2.2Hdi, now that's a different wossname.

the 2.2 hdi is 170bhp is it not though??

I like the 406 coupe 2.2hdi but again, insurance seems to be a killer on pugs for me.

I assume Lancer? (as opposed to M3 Evo, Integrale Evo etc)

Personally, I'd probably hang onto the Pug until then. In fact, I'd probably keep it then as well - the Evo is a pretty hardcore car for every day driving!

In the meantime, what's the point in spending a load of cash that could be saved towards your "dream car" on an interim whim.

Also, since insurance (and hence, NCD) is important to you young 'uns, you have FAR less chance of stacking the Pug than a Beemer. ESPECIALLY if you turbo a 325!

BTW, even at 21-22, insurance on an Evo will be a killer.

NO!!!!!!

Think light, think old ... get a decent 323i from the mid 80's. You do not want a 325i se 1995, which is a fat bloater that gets stuck in 1/2 inch of snow. And won't corner as well as the E21 in the wet. And won't get a second look from anyone because they are far, far to common nowadays. Of course, if you are a crap driver prone to crashing, you deserve all the protection you can get ... so in that case the newer safety feature laden car would be better.

Back to the snow bit ... during the last serious bit of snow we had (3 inches) i passed several cars which had got stuck, merely by stopping at a junction then wanting to pull away. My weapon of choice ... a 720kg citroen ax with 4 tyres running 10psi!!!! NEVER got stuck.

BMW 525E low geared. BMW 730I always low on fuel. Citroen axgt (modified) audi s3 chaser.

The number of people I saw last year driving in first gear, with one wheel spinning like mad and the other wheel that's got some traction hardly turning... Still, I did manage to get up to 70mph on the speedo whilst still travelling at walking pace whilst I was having some fun :P.

Heh - at my last place of work, I got the Security Pickup (a Ford Something ?) upto an indicated 120mph (as high as the speedo would read) at walking pace on a muddy field :) :)

Well yes. A lardy 406, with a lardy 1.9 Diesel engine, is hardly a fast car :)

Eh ?

Taking performance into account, they cost LESS to insure.

Plenty of 2.0 130bhp-ish family saloons, hover around the group 10 mark.

Any "hot hatch" even approaching that level of power, will cost you PLENTY more !

But easily tweakable for a BIG gain. 170bhp is a reasonable target to aim for. 200bhp if you've got some cash.

It was a Ranger - 3.0 diesel i think? And he isn't kidding....

Remember the driving on the playground at 3am :)

That was it - Ford Ranger. Although it can't have been a 3.0 - it was totally gutless. 2.0 I rekon.

Yes :)
