Various sizes of the VTEC, yes. But they're not a direct comparison as they're comparatively gutless until the VTEC kicks in.

There's no low coolant warning, only a temp guage and it goes north really quick - mine dropped a hose on the M1 and I lost a gasket then - at about
90k miles, got it done properly and sold it at 160k miles for 500 quid, only paid 2000 for it with 60k miles on so it cost me 2p/mile depreciation. Which is the one statistic that made it better than an SL55AMG.
And subarus. And the BMW straight six. And the VW 1.8. Any more?
Non-turbo Scooby made 120bhp. Non-Turbo VAG 1.8 a bit more, not sure about the BMW, but I'm sure it wasn't the thick end of 160bhp.
Oh sorry, we're measuring by bhp and you're excluding the Hondas? What year was it?
1995.
For a N/A 2lt it was _almost_ at the head of the pack. The Mi16 ran it close, Honda were in the same ball-park. No-one else was close.
Honda were first getting 160bhp from a 1.6 in 1989, reliably too... and half the point with VTEC is you're maintaining half decent power and economy lower down, as well has having out and out manic power higher up.
Vauxhall were getting 156bhp from a 2.0 16v N/A in 1988, again reliably, and with big power gains easily extracted for not all that much cash.
In news: snipped-for-privacy@individual.net, JackH decided to enlighten our sheltered souls with a rant as follows

I like... I want :-)
Surely it's a lower insurance group than the SL55 AMG as well?
All this reminds me of my Fiesta van, the first relatively modern vehicle (
1995 ?
Er, the 1.9 165bhp Mi16 lump was around in 1989 !
