To be fair, despite the property prices, Edinburgh is very pikey indeed.

And yes, I know you no longer live there.

Now we're getting down to semantics. There are undesireable places to live in Edinburgh, places indeed where people might steal things from your car, however I'm sure that the average car cloner or wouldbe speed camera agitating scumbag would at least have the couple of quid necessary to have his own numberplates made. Even the pikeys appear to be pikey where you live.

Why pay for a plate when 2 minutes with a screwdriver gets them for nothing?

Especially as, these days, getting hold of plates means ordering off the 'net, which means both paying for them and having to wait up to a week or so for them to be delivered.

It's a crime that will become more and more common as more and more ANPR cameras are put up to monitor and charge us for everything......

Might get caught, risk of being recognised, trouble finding a car similar enough to nick the plates off.

Walk into any shop with plate making facilites (not Halfords) in this country and they'll make you a nice plate for cash.

My point is really that I would have thought anyone involved in this sort of number pinching activity is probably nefarious enough to own or be close to someone who owns the equipment to do it themselves. Where you live, such lawbreakers would appear to be too poor, so they steal the plates instead. Probably.

Who said anything about putting them on a similar car?

Nick any plate from a taxed car and you know that, no matter what you put it on (within reason - obviously putting a prefix V on a 1985 Nova would be silly), you'll have done enough to pass any ANPR check and won't get any NIPs. The cameras aren't clever enough to know a plate doesn't match a car, and there aren't enough plod around to run a PNC check on a vehicle.

Which is why I'm assuming the plates are on a Corsa being ragged through all the cameras in Cardiff as we speak.
