Re: Why do people not like beemers?

My question is this, whats your overall opinion of beemers

Overpriced and unreliable.

In news:cicv9s$pok$ snipped-for-privacy@newsg2.svr.pol.co.uk, REMUS decided to enlighten our sheltered souls with a rant as follows

Some BMWs in the past were as good as the hype. The E28 M5, the original M3, the 3.0 CSL and the M1 being prime examples.

Unfortunately, most aren't.

I'll never buy another BMW. They don't drive that well, they don't handle that well, they're not built very well, they're expensive to fix, expensive to service, poorly equipped, unreliable, and generally driven by smug gits.

as for the E30 M3 kit, are you sure you mean the E30?

The people that own them are what give the marque its worst name.... But seriously:- BMW must be laughing all the way to the bank, build quality is down, performance is down, handling is poor, but poor stupid yuppies who wouldn't know a gearknob from a conrod keep buying them at inflated prices just because they are a 'status' symbol. Servicing and maintenance prices are unbelievable.. It's got that bad that a long time BMW owner friend of mine just gave up on his last 5 series and chopped it in for a Skoda (passat copy).. Loves it... recons its faster, more fun to drive, and better built. Now that is sad.. but history means shit these days.. skoda were crap, now brilliant, BMW were good .. now crap..!

(z4's not bad to drive though, bit of a break in the mould there.. took one round silverstone a few weeks ago... quite impressive) Lou..

pah bull

they don't handle

what are you a shopping trolley jockey????????

bit of grunt and RWD means infinite handling fun

they're not built very well,

they're expensive to fix

eurocar parts german and swedish need i say more

, expensive

thats what spanner sets are for and even the dealer stuff aint dear

old man goes to main dealer for his E36 and its actually pretty reasonable

poorly equipped,

compared to what???????

unreliable,

wheres the proof? never had any problems in our family with a whole host of beemers

and generally driven by smug gits.

i also own a nova and the old man a 205 so um no

Pete get a grip m8 and go drive a beemer see what your missing

People tend to buy them for the badge rather than the quality(?) engineering - nothing special thesedays - and then only some shitty 316 compact or something...

I'd rather have a nice Mercedes, Saab C900 or Lexus IS..(yep!)

Now the E30 325i was fun, best car they made IMO.. Unfortunately they've all been chavved to death....

Too true :) Except of course in the outside lane of the M1, where no matter how fast you go, if they can stay with you, although most are 316's and as such, can't stay with much, they will attach themselves to your bumper and you WILL pull over, irrelevent of whether you're passing 3 lorrys, and already doing 125mph 1 inch from the car in front....

That R version of the IS200, badged as an Atezza, is very very nice.

THey used to be good but then build quality went down and they became popular amongst the young black/asian community. THey don't have the nickname Black Mans Wheels for nothing.

bollocks of a motor now!

Yeah, but they aren't going to get near the new M5 with V10 and 7spd SMG for a while are they.

As I recall it being explained to me, and once admitted by someone at BMW, the 3 Series (M3 excepted +maybe the 330 and 325 models) was for people who wanted a BMW, but couldn't afford to buy or run one. It was the Cortina/Sierra/Mondeo(can't remember when it was exactley quoted) of the BMW range. It was for the man who wanted to look like he could afford BMW.

Of course the M3 changed all that, and made the 3 series a proper BMW (even it it was only on that model and a couple of other high end ones).

Of course, I would rather own an Alpina than an M-Sport anyway.

i wouldnt - it would look wrong - the window on a m3 is at a different angle and theres a higher bootlid - something about improving airflow?

i like my E30 318i it gives me problems yes (bit of a love hate thing) - but so do other cars and ive owned allsorts, i after another car now before its MOT is out, and i just cant find anything i like!

Now that is Lardy but light :)

Perfect for the Atkins generation, Lard Light.

6 litre A6? Cool. What's that, a V12? W12?

When I read the "30 seconds" bit I thought you were being sarcastic, but then I read the 155mph bit. Then I read the 450hp bit, and thought a bit more and think you still might be being sarcastic! Brain's not engaged today - d'oh.

Can someone tell me if getting to 155mph in 30 seconds is all that impressive? I'd consider a car to be pretty damn quick doing the 0-60 sprint in around 5 seconds, and probably 0-100 in about 10-12 seconds perhaps? So surely 155mph in 30 seconds isn't that spectacular? I'm probably completely wrong.

But 450bhp out of a W12? I'm sure the W12 had more than that. I mean, the latest RS6 is supposed to have close to 500bhp, and that's out of a piddly little twin-turbocharged eight cylinder engine. Surely 12 cylinders could do better?

I'm either talking crap or becoming a troll. Help me please.

It's 6 litres not of raw power but smooth delivery I think. Not everybody wants a ridiculous amount of power, delivered with the subtlety of a baseball bat - some still want an excess of power, delivered beautifully. I have no doubts about the potential of that Audi engine - they may supertune it for some kind of kickass RS8?

probably heavily detuned as a monster lump cruiser than a traffic light racer.

Probaly does 0-155 in 30 seconds at idle in top from a standing start.

in news:6aB2d.186$ snipped-for-privacy@newsfe1-win.ntli.net, "AstraVanMan" slurred :

Theoretically, with a perfect cvt gearbox, and no wind resistance ;), it should take (155/60)^2 = 6.67 times as long to get to 155 as it does to get to 60, so 0-155 of 30 secs is roughly equivalent performance to 0-60 in 4.5 secs, and 0-100 in 12.5 secs, so not bad at all.

All true, and I'm not a skilled enough driver (nor do I give it enough boot) to appreciate the real 'getting the arse-end out' aspect of RWD, but I do appreciate the lack of torque steer.
