No they don't! They are hideous.
No they don't! They are hideous.
But enough of Rover, what do you think of BMW?

90% of the time they've got nasty clutch actions in the manuals, and the autos are a bit on the lazy side. The 540i I had for a while also had pretty awful steering.Er, no, I drive a lot of the new cars on the market, I have over 1000 to choose from, including BMWs, my brother has a 12 month old 530d, and I don't rate them.
Agreed, I love rwd cars, ffs, I've got a Capri, I know about rwd fun. BMWs however, don't do rwd fun that well anymore. The E21 and E30 did, but the E34 and stuff after is just too safety orientated and not sharp enough.
My 1990 G plate 535i wasn't as well built as my J reg RS2000. My G plate
520i was a travesty, and the 96 540i I used to use was an utter disgrace. It rattled more than the Sierra estate I've got now does.Eurocarparts and the like are very good, agreed, but the stuff on the 540i that went wrong was invariable "dealer only". The autobox that blew up at
60k miles, for example.I enjoy a bit of spannering from time to time, but occasionally I like to put a car in for a full service at a specialist or main agent for preventative reasons. If they break it, they fix it. Keeps the service historians happy. Bloody expensive to do with the 540i though.
They can be good occasionally, but it's rare.
Er, almost anything. brothers' 530d cost £38k and it's not that well specced at all. Leather seats (not electric), cd player, auto box, and electric blinds. For the proper BMW carphone to work using iDrive costs over £700 ffs. The 540i I used to drive was specced up to over £55k new, and it had nothing you don't get on a top spec Omega for free.
Ok, from my personal experience. E21 323i - gearbox and camshaft (64000 miles), E34 520iSE - rear hub, radiator, clutch, front struts, front lower arms, abs sensors and driveshaft joint (in 12000 miles at 4 years old), E34
535i - AC pump, pas rack, 3 wheel bearings, water pump and cylinder head (72000 miles), E30 325i - everything, E28 528iSE - front lower arms, 4 shocks, radiator, AC pump, condenser and drier (81000 miles), E39 540i - gearbox at 60k miles, abs sensors on an almost weekly basis, 2x rear hubs, pdc sensors on regular basis, dashboard computer display "they all do that, sir" and various bits of trim fell off weekly. My brothers BMWs -
02 plate 520iSE - regular clutch failures in 51000 miles, 2x engine management ECUs, ABS computer replaced, bits of trim from underneath falling off regularly. 53 plate 530d - new turbo at 23000 miles, cylinder head replaced *twice* so far, new gearbox ecu, iDrive computer has had more software "upgrades" than Windoze 98, headlight computer needed rebooting after it switched off the headlights due to a Merc CL with Xenons travelling towards it and it thought it was daylight. These aren't hard used cars either, they're religiously serviced, mainly motorway used cars. My brother also happens to be rather high up in one of the major motoring organisations in this country (clue, they have bright orange vans and they're not the AA, big office on the M6) and BMW *still* can't get his car to work as it should.I've owned too many BMWs. I'd rather have my Sierras for the grief BMs give.
What's Rover got to do with anything ?
The Rover I used to own wasn't either of those things, but you knew that already.
What do you think of the E30 series? As you can tell im thinking about getting one, but i'm 19 and I got quoted £1200 per year but I can join bmw club thingy and save 10% so a E30 325i will cost £1090 on my own insurance.
My other choice would be a locally advertised mrk 2 golf with a VR6 engine, but im not familiar with VR6 power stats or insurance group.
Yeah definately, but havnt you ever heard of the E30 M3?
I am attracted to the shape of the E36, but they seem to be a magnet for shit body kits. Although I did see a nice boomex (i think thats the company) body kit a while back.
shity bollocks of a motor now!
I still like the sound of the 3 series being the peoples BMW. I keep saying it but I like BMW styling past and present with the exception of the "shark-nose" era.
I'm not familiar with the alpina, ive seen lots of relpica's, i'll have a look on the net for some stats and history tonight even tho i'm a bit pissed :P

Yup, I've heard of them, I very nearly bought one when I got my 2nd Integrale. The £1000 camchain replacement cost put me off...
That and the fact an Integrale just looks sooooooo funky
The insurance group will be well high. E30 are OK. 325i is well fast.
My dad owned one of those, dumped it somewhere in ipswich when the motor seized! Technically it's still registered to him, I wonder...
boomex make a nice front bumper for the MKII MR2, just a bit of pointless un-related info :)
Badged RS i believe and has a 210bhp beams inside ;)
Yeah your right, I thought the only troll on the group was that "abo" thing.
The pointy batmobile jobs were the best ones, you absolute gibbering bufoon!
well if you want to buy one and dress up like batman doki... : P
Yep, bring a ladder, take it up to Buckingham Palace. You'll have no trouble around there.
Peter
You mean "you're", HTH.
4 cylinder afaik with the IS being 6?
Remind me to avoid you - if you think you're a good driver, it's highly likely that you aren't.
Especially if you can't tell that RWD has some serious advantages.
Richard
Put it this way - Insurance doesn't like modified cars. If you get quoted £1200 for a crappy E20, imagine how much they'll like a V6 engined Golf.
