S-Max Mini Review

2.0 TDCi Titanium

Was ok actually, drove more like an estate car then an MPV. Loads of legroom and the rear two seats are the same size as the middle three, instead of being tiny like the Zafira was.

Not a surprise, given that it's one size band up....

I was doing my OCD thing and cleaning the cockpit of the Focus today - Ford really do believe that people in the back are somehow '2nd class' - the quality of the trim is visibly worse than the already iffy stuff in the front.

100% hard plastic door card, not a square cm of fabric on it, ffs.

Yeah true, I just like the way they've made it all fit together and have two decent seats and actually some useable boot space. My sister has a Kia Sedona and with the rear seats in (I think they store in the garage instead of under the floor? the load space is almost non-existent.

What spec is it, BTW?

It's no iffier than the stuff in a Mk5 Golf.

Which is ideal for a family car that is likely to have young kids in the back. Wipes clean, you see. Ideal for a long life.

Oh, it is.

Last time I looked, the Golf had fabric panels in the cards.

That's just a convenient excuse for using cheap injection moulded s**te, really.

And it's the really cheap stuff that scuffs if you dare look at it - plus it's so thin that touching the window winder sees the whole lot flexing.

Do you need 7 seats? - could be worth looking at a Honda FRV? - 6 seats in the 'Multipla' configuration. Looks pretty funky for an MPV, too.

1.6TDCI LX Estate.

Not quite the lowest of the low, but pretty close.

The only vaguely redeeming feature of it is that the Peugeot derived engine is reasonably powerfull, quite free revving for a diesel, and apepars to be more economical than my old Passat.

Feels like a massive step-down from my previous role, even though I have taken a significant pay increase.

Roll on Prius order day ;-)

My brother has an Espace. Brilliant thing, but it's people *or* luggage. Doesn't worry him much as he has the E class as well, so luggage can go in that.

Obviously a mega-poverty spec one. No quick-clear screen and from the way Steve's badge snobbery is blinding him, it's obviously got a cobbled floor and dry stone door trims.

Not in mine it isn't.

I don't understand Ford trim levels.

The LX appears to be one up from the style, but gets semi-auto air-con / climate. Still has plastic wheel trims, though.

The Zetec is the 'warm' one, so you get alloys but no air-con.

I say it doesn't have quick-clear, but how do you tell? - is there a specific button for it?

Still, it's only a pool car to see me through for the time being. I'd seriously consider bailing out of this job if I were to be stuck with it.

When did you buy a Focus?

LX is more comfy, Zetec is better handling. AC etc is optional on both I think, as part of a pack.

Yup, normally next to the heated rear screen button there'll be another one for the front screen.

You'll miss it when you get the Pious.

Standard on the LX, option on the Zetec....

If the LX is 'comfy' I daren't think how harsh a Zetec is....

Right, there isn't. Probably because it was an option.

I doubt it.

A mongbox makes more difference to me than anything else.

Possibly, though it might be on the same button as the rear one. Easy to tell though - just look closely at the screen itself - if you can see loads of very thin element type bits all over it, then that's it.

The Zetec rides about the same, just leans a bit less in corners.

That must be a proper poverty spec job you've got. I've not seen one without at least one option pack on.

The Pious is an ideal mongbox. Honestly, they're fun for an hour or two and then you just realise what an utter heap of shit they are.

I'd be bailing out of your job now if you're gonna be lumbered with a Pious for a couple of years. I will never, ever, trade another Pious as long as I live.

If they're the future of motoring, I'm going sailing.

Yeah

Bet you never ever thought you'd say that! ;)

On the other hand, if I was lumbered with this heap of crap long term, I'd be walking.

An auto box is essential for me - especially now I'm covering Bristol again and have picked up central Cardiff, too.

I can forgive all kinds of faults if I have the auto.

Pete M gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

The one I tried didn't even entertain for that long.

You'll have to. The auto box in the Pious is about the only thing that they have going for them.

I would honestly say you might well be best driving a Pious before you make any long term plans.

You'd really give up a 'significant pay increase' to win points in Usenet arguments?

Dude, step back over the line, Usenet doesn't really matter...

Erm, no.

I'd have to seriously consider how much I wanted the job if my long-term company car was a manual diesel Focus.

Not a nice car to have to drive - only had it a couple of days and already my left knee is playing up.
