Uh oh - 'what car' car opinions sought - BMWs

Ah right. I wasn't expecting for a minute that my Sprinter would compare favourably to anything in terms of outright bhp and 0-60 figures, and it doesn't. With it's massive power to weight ratio of 40.9bhp/tonne (fully laden), and 0-60 of really nothing at all spectacular, I can confirm it doesn't :-)

But the new shape V6 one - I wonder if that would hit 60 in about 10 seconds. Still doubt it, as it's not geared for performance, being a van and all that. Anyhoo, my general point wasn't about performance, more that "if it's broadly the same performance, then it'd be a fair comparison to do a high-as-possible speed run and compare the economy to the Exploder. Or something......

Hehe PeteMs are not new, and it doesn't have any Cats I don't think?

I think you're thinking it's something a lot more complicated than it is Tom, it was a proper conversion, but it was like, many moons ago. I think it was manufacturer supported in some way at the time, some kind've option in some way? He's said before but I've forgotton. Pete? What was the story back then?

And was tuned using old fashion methods with like, sticks and rocks :-)

Dunno, but where it matters, on the motorway I can just outhaul whatever the f*ck sort of Sprinter that the Italians buy. Just.

The Exploder is faster but only by a smidge and as soon as I ease off the throttle even slightly, the Sprinter will be 6in off my arse flashing headlights and demanding that I move over.

Mind you, the next hill and the situation is reversed.

Oooo I love these threads hehe :-) What's your 100-0mph braking time you reckon :-)? You too Pete? Mines 100-0mph in 4.3seconds, faster than an F430 Scuderia (reading the review in an Evo mag right now and just noticed that, which is why I had to include it) which takes 4.9! And 197bhp, 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, I've had 136mph GPS, which is 2mph more than the book speed...

But I have a photo that, well, doesn't really prove it, from the road thatwe thought was an autobahn in Germany, but then it turned out it wasn't hehe. Anyway I kept my foot in after this was taken for a little while longer...

...we had TomTom on the windscreen with a passenger calling out the numbers and then I had to slow because we were approaching traffic and it was only a 2 lane road.

Hasn't it been mapped or chipped or something?

Dunno what ones the Italians buy, or how loaded up they are, but it depends largely on the model - most common is the 311CDI over here, but I suspect a V6 diesel one would give yours a run for its money. Not sure if they sell the V6 petrol in Italy. They don't sell them here, so I'd have to look into a special order or import or something. Still, I want to get at least another year or two out of mine first....

I don't know about the time, but the braking distance from 100mph is about 1 inch longer than the braking distance of a BMW 330. As I know from bitter experience.

The Rangie is 100-0 in about 3-4 miles.

No cats are needed, without cats it's even prefeered :-)

You get the picture wrong: I don't doubt the quality of the kit but the kit uses -inevitably- the technology available at the time.

Everyone has passed there but back in those dark years petrol was cheaper than it is today.

Twenty years back we tuned carbs, it took 30 hours to polish one and get a setup for maximum power. Nowerdays I see a computer (costing half as much as 30 hours of labor) optimising the complete rev-range, keeping the mixture spot-on.

Sticks and rocks are good, If you receive a big enough roch on the head you still are dead... but modern armies don't use rocks anymore.

The cost of the adaptif ECU is around 3000 UKP and it's almost certain that with the actual (mechanical) setup it will reduce fuel consumption by 20% and rise max power by 10-15%.

Concerning the gearbox: I am afraid you could be correct that it will blow up. That won't happen on the rollers however because on the rollers

3th or 4th gear will be selected. This is indeed done in order to prevent spilled gearbox internals on the rolling road (and all discussions about who's fault that is)

Most gearboxes expire in second gear with WOT or when going from second to third "mit vollen dampf" (turbo delivering boost and engine at optimum torque RPM): red light races are macho stuff but bad for the transmission components.

Pretty similar to the Amoco Cadiz then :-)
