what would you do?

MK1 looks a bit tacky, bit of rust starting to show now sadly :(

what would you do though? get the body work done to 'as new' condition and dump a 1.6 super charger engine from a AE92 levin in it? or save and by a MKII turbo which right now is what i'm tempted to do. MKII isn't as good handerling wise i know but tunable, get 300bhp without having to change intercoolers, pistons and turbo's and RWD :)

won't change mine for another year as it has that left in it easily before the rust gets silly or MOT failing i reckon...

It doesn't matter what we think, which one would YOU rather have? If it's the MK1 then get the rust fixed ASAP, if it's the Mk2 then leave it as it is and give the rust a quick diy patch up before you sell it. If it was for me as a second car, I'd keep the Mk1 and put the supercharged

4AGZE into it but also stick a T04E turbo onto it to get some real power in a lightweight body.

Homer.

PS. Better saving for a late model Mk2 rather than a cheap early one.

supercharged

hehe that would be well good, turbo'ed MK1 :) there's some guy on the MR2 club that has a MKII turbo engine in a MK1! think i might try and get a ride/drive in a MKII to see what it feels like. i like the sharpness of the MK1 handerling wise but would like more power and to be able to cruise along without loads of noise!

was thinking of a MKII rev 2 turbo? the rust will no doubt get worse and i could pay shit loads for it not to be done right and return *sigh*

i'll listen to dan and worry bout it in a year :)

I wouldn't bother throwing money at yours. Once it's started rusting, it won't stop. And it'll cost you mega money to get it back to "as new" condition.

If you want a MK1, then get rid of yours and buy a better one - s'charged import if you like.

If you want a MK2, then get rid of yours and buy one - turbo import if you like.

I'd get the rust fixed right, leave the engine as is, and remember that the Mk II is a boat in comparison.

Depends on where the rust is. Mk 1 rear arches are a well documented problem and plenty of repaired cars will go another 5-6 years without any problems. Only other areas I'm aware of being an issue are the top of the windscreen (in which case I'd find another one) and the front of the front wings, which shouldn't be an issue.

Are you doing the "handerling" thing for a joke now or what? :P

How bad is they rust? Is it's just surface rust, or are holes actually starting to appear? If just surface rust, perhaps think about getting it sorted and maybe a full respray (cant cost that much, its only a wee car :)). If the rust is bad, and not easily weldable then why not start road rallying it (remember my mates mk1?) and look into getting another decent mk1 (maybe one with good body but knackered engine, then an AE92 or even your current engine, as didnt it recently have a rebuild?), or find a nice mk2 for a starter car for stupid power mods.
