Cobra Stock Exhaust Vs. Flowmaster

Hi...been contacted by a guy who has flowmaster exhaust installed on his '99 Cobra and wants to trade me even for the stock exhaust on my '99 cobra. He says it is too loud for him. My question for the group, "is this worth my time, is it louder than stock and would you do it?"

Please let me know. I respect your opinions.

I used to have Flowmaster's on my '98 GT, along with nice custom-made 2.5" stainless tubing and two high-flow cats. It sounded GREAT for the first few months. After a short while, carbon and rust buildup inside caused it to turn into a migraine-inducing torture device that reminded me of fingernails on a chalkboard...squared.

I'd pass if I were you. Want a REALLY nice growl on a budget without obnoxious amounts of irritaing noise and drone? Swap two high-flow cats into your stock exhaust. The sound you will get is a moderately-volumed version of Kowalski's '70 Challenger in "Vanishing Point", which in my opinion, is truly pleasing to the ear.

I second the hi-flo cats with stock mufflers. I've had that system on my 94 for years and I still get compliments on the sound.

HEY!!! Someone else besides ME has done this??? YES!!! Until now, I have yet to meet anyone who has done this. I have yet to meet anyone who didn't like the exhaust tone with this setup.

Okay, I'm curious, is your '94 an eight? Does it sound like Kowalski's Challenger when you stand on it, as mine does? Great V-8 rumble without all the the ear-splitting volume...and affordable.

I am looking into replacing the exaust on my 98 cobra, what would you guys recommend. On my 85 gt, I have dual chamber flowmasters 2 1/2" cat back, with 92 stock headers and stock h pipe, and it sounds good. Had it since

96, and never had a rust problem or anything of the sort. It still sounds good.

And you like the resonance at 2000 rpm?? You ever drive it long distances??

To the group...thanks for the responses. Between them and my friends at work, I think I'll pass on this guys offer. I'm 47 YO and am not that interested in 10 more HP and the "migraine inducing" drone. Plus...the extra attention from the local deputy's is not on top of my list either.

WTH does age have to do with exhaust sound ?? I'm 41yo and I'd love to stick "Cut-Outs" on my car! J/K! ;>) ;>)

Anyways, when folks speak of Flowmasters, not many folks refer to the DELTA series. The DELTAs are OFTEN overlooked by MANY!

I have 40 Series Deltas on my 89 5.0 and I think they are TOO quite. This is given the fact that my 89 5.0 also has a 2.5" O/R H-pipe (read NO CATS). It is STILL too quite IMHO.

Before I had the Deltas installed, my car still had the OEM mufflers. It sounded all right, but was TOO quite for my taste. I wanted more of a HotRod sound, but didn't want the 2K drone from the original 40 Series Flows. That's why I went with the 50 Series DELTAs.

Some folks say that Flowmasters will get louder with age/mileage. I can't explain the reasoning behind this theory, but I think my Deltas are a "tad" bit louder than when they where first installed. Could be I added a K&N, 73 C&L, Hypertech Chip afterwards though. ??

If that dudes car has Deltas on it, I'd jump on that swap in a Heartbeat!

BTW, anyone have the link for that Mustang Exhaust Sound files website ??

Ooops!! That's a TYPO!

I meant 40 Series Deltas. NOT the 50 Series.

welllllll, age doesn't really have anything to do with it except maybe I have become a tad more conservative in my old age and don't want the attention. As it is anyway, I constantly get challenged by "punks" and am able to blow them off and away....except, the noise attracts attention and insurance is bad enough without points on the DL. I have no clue what type or series he has. One of my friends suggested I go for a ride with him first before I make up my mind. I'll take your advise into consideration too.

I bought mine for $40 bucks each at the local muffler shop, installed. Most of the performance muffler outfits around here carry them, as they are quite popular.

A wise choice. I'm 45 and don't care for the ear-splitting cackle or drone either. Swapping in high-flow cats gave me exactly what I wanted: a nice, quiet 70's big-block growl and plenty of exhaust flow, on a budget.

along the same lines, why would the stock exhaust sound much more loud and aggressive on a 96 gt as compared with an 03 cobra??

does the gt have two chamber and the cobra have three chamber mufflers?

when i would downshift in my gt it used to let out a nice "BBBLUB-BLUB-BLURB-BLURB" sound and loud, but now my cobra there is not even one blub!

(not complaining however)

No economy problems in your area, for sure. $40, installed, per side? Care to tell the rest of us how much an oil change costs? $2, maybe?

LOL!

Ordinarily I would agree with you...and I do, on the sound. Flows sound great! I have 2 chambers on my GT now, but I'm on my way to dumping them for Magnaflow because they are RUSTED TO SHIT inside!!! Okay, took about two years to get there, but the baffles are blown nonetheless.

But, I was warned... Oh yes, I was warned...

I'd like to learn a little bit more about exhaust systems so I can comprehend more when you guys compare this stuff. Anybody got a web-site or

2 explaining what these things are & how they work possibly? Thanks in advance folks.

'01 Cobra w/ O/R X and 2 Chamber Flows. At first it sounded horrible. Like rocks in a tin can. It has now smoothed out to a really nice low rumble. Gets lots of comments. Most think I replaced the 4.6 with a big block. No drone but it is loud inside (convertible). :>)))))

Oh, I'm 42 going on 18.
